Cluster 7. Bomvrije remise.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Description
Cluster 7. Bombproof remise.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Introduction
BOMBPROOF REMISE, building U, as built and backfilled component part of Fort Ronduit. Fort Ronduit is located in the northern section of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, between the Fortress Naarden and the former Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer. The fort is physically connected by means of a defensive rampart on its southern side to the Fortress Naarden. Fort Ronduit served to defend the areas outside the dikes on the northern side of the fortress, the sea dike and the Naarder Trekvaart. Naarden was of very great military-strategic importance as defence of the direct access to Amsterdam. The fort was intended to prevent the Fortress Naarden from being bypassed on its northern side. The bombproof remise dates from circa 1874 and is situated at the south-eastern corner of Fort Ronduit. The building has its facade and entrance on the north-western side and is further backfilled all around. The small building was intended as a shelter for artillery and personnel and at the rear was a storage space with a rack in which projectiles filled with gunpowder could be stored. The remise was built around 1874 and was considered bombproof according to the standards of the time. Following the invention of the high-explosive shell in 1885, a bombproof situation no longer existed and buildings of this type could be considered obsolete.
Description
The BOMBPROOF REMISE, building U, from circa 1874, is situated on the south-eastern side of the fort and consists of a rectangular structure backfilled on three sides and on top with thick masonry walls of at least one metre thickness (bombproof). The only visible facade faces north-west and is provided with a double clamped door with a course of brick. The facade terminates in a broken string course of brick courses. The side walls of the west facade are incorporated into the earthwork. The interior space of the remise is approximately 5.00 x 2.00 metres and is covered with a barrel vault. A small space is partitioned off at the rear.
Valuation
The BOMBPROOF REMISE, building U, is of general importance for the following reasons:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the arms race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).
The component is an example of a bombproof structure from circa 1874.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also for the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component from circa 1874 is representative as an example of a bombproof remise of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as these were also built elsewhere in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, according to a consistent pattern and with the application of comparable building materials, layout and detailing.
* The component is well-preserved because the remise has been little or not altered compared to its condition at the time of construction.
