NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 7. Bomb-proof guardhouse.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE, building T, as built and earthed component of Fort Ronduit. Fort Ronduit is located in the northern part of the New Hollandic Waterline, between the Fortress Naarden and the former Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer. The fort is physically connected to the Fortress Naarden by means of a defensive embankment on the south side. Fort Ronduit served to defend the out-of-dike lands on the north side of the fortress, the sea dike and the Naarder Trekvaart. Naarden was of very great military-strategic importance as a defence of the direct access to Amsterdam. The fort was to prevent the Fortress Naarden from being bypassed on the north side. The guardhouse was intended as the first fortification and surveillance of the fort. The building has two masoned facades on the west and north sides and is earthed on the two other sides. This provided clear sight of the west and north sides of the fort and the access bridge. The guardhouse dates from circa 1874. The guardhouse at Fort Ronduit could house a maximum of eight people in wartime. It was considered bomb-proof by the standards of the time. With the invention of the high-explosive shell in 1885, there was no longer any bomb-proof situation and buildings of this type could be considered outdated.

Description

BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE, building T, from circa 1874 with two, standing at right angles to each other, masoned facades on the west and north sides and earthed on the two other sides. In the west facade, two small windows provide a view of the crane bridge and the moat. In the north facade is a clamped door with on either side likewise a small window. Above it a large relieving arch has been placed and on the left side a heavy wing wall. In the interior the guardhouse consists of a single room of approximately 6.00 x 4.00 metres, vaulted with a barrel vault.

Valuation

The component BOMB-PROOF GUARDHOUSE, building T, is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus is realised and subsequently by others during approximately 125 years has been strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the arms race with increasing offensive means (19th century).

The component is an example of a bomb-proof structure from circa 1874.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component from circa 1874 is representative as an example of a guardhouse of the New Hollandic Waterline and it is relatively rare because of the physical execution with two facades at right angles to each other and two earthed sides.

* The component is well preserved because the guardhouse has not or has hardly been altered compared to the situation at the time of construction.
