Cluster 3. Gietstalen koepelkazematten type G.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 3. Cast-steel cupola casemates type G.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINE

Introduction

Complete CAST-STEEL CUPOLA CASEMATE TYPE G as part of an access defence with trench systems, group shelters and the like and situated north of Fort Uitermeer. In 1936, as a supplement to the reinforced concrete casemate, the so-called cast-steel cupola casemate was introduced in the Netherlands, which was based on a system already applied in France in 1917. The armoured cupolas used were small in size (favourable with regard to visibility and hit probability), round in shape (favourable with regard to deflecting hits and strength), relatively simple to produce in series and they had an 'external' shooting opening (favourable with regard to gases and sound). Moreover, they could be manufactured in the Netherlands, which significantly reduced dependence on foreign countries. A first order of 100 pieces in the Netherlands (from DEMKA) was followed by a second of 50 pieces from the Belgian Soc. Anonyme John Cockerill. In total, over 700 must have been cast in a short time, but only a few have survived. The cast-steel cupolas, with a diameter of 1.75 m and thicknesses of 10-17 centimetres, are installed in multiple casemate types with resistance classes W 12-15 to W 21-28. Shortly before the beginning of the Second World War, so-called Cupola Casemates Type G were constructed in various places in the Dutch lines, notably in the IJssel line, the Maas line, the Grebbe line (each approximately 150) and the New Hollandse Waterline (approximately 80). The customary construction of reinforced concrete with one or more fixed gun openings was hereby abandoned in favour of a system which possessed, within variably adjustable limits (up to 270°), a projectile direction within a cast-steel cylinder with cupola roof. Standard Cupola Casemates were equipped with a heavy machine gun as armament. Most cupolas were placed in Standard Cupola Casemates Type G. During the Second World War, the vast majority of cupolas inland were dismantled from the casemates by the occupier - partly by blowing them up - to remelt them for other steel requirements. On the coast they were partly incorporated into the defence, but were mostly dismantled after the war. As a result, complete cupola casemates are rare, but they still occur at Fort Vechten (2), at Fort Everdingen (1) and near Fort Uitermeer (1).

Description

North of Fort Uitermeer, located at the railway crossing in the Keverdijk, complete CAST-STEEL CUPOLA CASEMATE TYPE G (number U 44) from 1939-1940 with a rare, completely intact, cast-steel machine-gun cupola. Cast-steel Cupola Casemates Type G were built according to a standardised design and consist of a cast-steel cupola, which is anchored in a reinforced concrete structure. The cupola is head height, has a diameter of 1.75 metres and a wall thickness of 0.14 metres. On the front side there is an approximately 10 cm thick 'eyebrow' to protect the shooting port with weapon and on the other side an entrance closable by a steel shutter. The shooting port and access to the casemate could be sealed 'gas-tight' from inside. The concrete structure consists of a relatively low rectangular building (approximately 7.00 x 6.50 x 2.20 m; w x d x h), with a bevelled section on the front side, to achieve maximum field of fire and to cause any direct hits to ricochet. Standard armament was a heavy machine gun. At the rear, at the entrance of the cupola, there is a recess in the concrete to allow access to the cupola. At the Cast-steel Cupola Casemate on the Keverdijk stands a Group Shelter type P.

Valuation

The complete CAST-STEEL CUPOLA CASEMATE TYPE G is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandse Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and thereafter strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthened offensive means (20th century) c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

The component is an example of a casemate from 1939-1940 which is still completely intact with cast-steel cupola.

* Ensemble value and situational values as components of the New Hollandse Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The Cast-steel Cupola Casemate at the railway crossing at the Keverdijk is extremely rare because few cupola casemates with a completely intact cast-steel machine-gun cupola have been preserved. The casemate at the Keverdijk is one of the last remaining casemates with a cast-steel cupola with a metal thickness of 14 cm.

* The Cast-steel Cupola Casemate at the Keverdijk is very well preserved, but is difficult to recognise due to its positioning.
