Cluster 3. V.I.S.-Mitrailleurkazematten.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Cluster 3. V.I.S.-Machine Gun Casemates.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
The V.I.S.-CASEMATE was added in serial form as an armed concrete defensive work to the existing defence system. Between 1928 and 1935, the Regulation for the Installation of Positions no. 77 (V.I.S.) appeared in several parts. These works arose from the desire to standardise the construction of armed concrete group shelters and combat positions, which had previously been lacking. The regulations were intended for the construction of positions in wartime conditions, by the troops themselves. In peacetime, the engineers would make other designs. Because the V.I.S. were intended for inexperienced conscript soldiers, the designs of the casemates were as simple as possible, with rectangular forms. Various construction possibilities were given for each casemate type, which could be adapted to the (wartime and terrain) conditions under which construction had to take place. The resistance capacity could also vary per structure, being W 12-15, W 15-21 or W 21-28. The first work of the V.I.S. was part VII, Construction of Heavy Armed Concrete Shelters. It applied from the date of publication as a norm for the entire Dutch armed forces. In contrast to what the title suggests, part VII deals mainly with combat positions. Only two of the ten example designs concern shelters. The regulations from the V.I.S. were strongly theoretical in nature or based on knowledge and experiences from neighbouring countries and the First World War. There were therefore various critical voices from military circles, both regarding the health risks to personnel and from a tactical-technical perspective. Only after a number of V.I.S.-casemates (in peacetime) had been built did a training casemate come into being, intended for the training of operating personnel. This led to some modifications of the already built structures. In total, approximately 40 V.I.S.-casemates were built in the Vesting Holland, of which 34 pieces at new or improved accesses in the Eastern Front Vesting Holland.
Description
The V.I.S.-CASEMATE 'Keverdijk' is located just near fort Uitermeer on the north-east side behind the lock on the Kreugerlaan and dates from 1934. The casemate was built to defend the provincial road Hilversum-Weesp laid out in 1927. Together with an identical casemate on Fort Hinderdam, the casemate 'Keverdijk' served as a flanking machine gun casemate for the V.I.S.-gun casemate on fort Uitermeer. This (now demolished) gun casemate could be directed frontally at the road. The armed concrete casemate 'Keverdijk' was built according to the Regulation for the Installation of Positions (V.I.S.) no. 77 type V. The structure stands on a strip foundation plate, is rectangular in form and one storey high. It has a flat roof, which is largely earthed over. The wall thicknesses vary from 1 metre to 1.80 metres. On top there is a covering of 1.50 metres of concrete, with earth on top of it. The entrance to the casemate is located on the left in the north-west wall. At right angles to it is a corridor to which two rooms adjoin. The first room was a waiting room for the personnel and had a periscope, the second was intended as a combat room for the machine gun. Both rooms have a rifle port in the direction of the corridor. For the machine gun there is a firing port on the other side, in the south-east wall. This funnel-shaped firing port is reinforced with a toothing of railroad rails.
Valuation
The V.I.S.-CASEMATE is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and first realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries), b. the arms race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (20th century) c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)
The component dates from 1934 and is an example of a V.I.S.-casemate, following the Regulation for the Installation of Positions. These regulations appeared between 1928 and 1935 with the aim of standardising positions and intended for their construction in wartime by the troops themselves.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical relationship with the other components of the complex, in particular the remaining V.I.S.-machine gun casemate on Fort Hinderdam.
* The component is quite rare because only 40 V.I.S.-casemates were built in the Netherlands and because of the mutual relationship with the V.I.S.-casemate on fort Hinderdam.
* The component is well-preserved and can still be clearly recognised in the field as such.
