Cluster 2. Duiker no.2.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 2. Culvert no.2.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

CULVERT as an addition to or refinement of the existing defence system dating from the Interwar period by means of inundations. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. By means of an ingenious system of sluices, culverts, dams, weirs, dike breaches and so forth, the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. For this purpose, existing civil water management structures were partly used. Sometimes the works were (substantially) adapted to military requirements. A limited part of the works was built specially for the New Hollandic Water Line. One of the frequently applied sluice types was the so-called culvert sluice. This is a lockable pipe under a road, through a dike or dam for the passage and/or discharge or inlet of water. Via culverts, the inundation fields separated by roads and embankments were nonetheless connected to one another.

The culvert dates from 1928 and is located at the Vechtbrug over the national highway A1, directly at the southern border of the fortress. The culvert consists of only one pipe. This connects the Vecht with the Naardermeeruitwatering. The culvert was intended to flood the polders, i.e. inundation basins south and east of Muiden. The inundation water was let in from the main inundation station at the Zuiderzee (IJsselmeer), via the moats of the fortress Muiden to the Vecht and via the culvert to the Naardermeeruitwatering.

Description

CULVERT consisting of a large concrete pipe under the full width of the river dike with berms. On the Vecht side the inlet opening is flanked by walls with a double row of sluice-post recesses. There is a rectangular concrete elevation in which the sluice gate is located. On this stands the winding gear by which the sluice gate can be wound up or down. Along the Vecht banks there is on either side of the culvert a heavy revetment of concrete and steel. On the side of the Naardermeeruitwatering, behind the outlet, there are two obliquely placed wing walls, also provided with heavy revetment of concrete with steel for the protection of the banks at incoming water.

Valuation

The CULVERT is of general importance because of:

* Cultural historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century), b. the race with strengthening offensive means (19th and 20th century)

The component is an example of a historical water engineering work related to military-strategic building construction, namely a culvert serving as a military inundation sluice.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is somewhat rare as an example of a culvert built specifically for military inundation.

* The component is reasonably well preserved and can be recognised in the field in its original function.
