Cluster 1. V.I.S.-Kazemat.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

W 12-15, W 15-21 of W 21-28).

Waardering

Cluster 1. V.I.S.-Casemate.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

The V.I.S.-CASEMATE was added in limited, serial form as an armed concrete defensive work to the existing defence system. Between 1928 and 1935, the Regulation for the Arrangement of Fortifications no. 77 (V.I.S.) appeared in a number of parts. These works arose from the desire to standardise the construction of armed concrete group shelters and combat positions, which had been lacking until then. The regulations were intended for the construction of fortifications in wartime conditions by the troops themselves. In peacetime, the engineers would make other designs. Because the V.I.S. was intended for inexperienced conscript soldiers, the designs of the casemates were as simple as possible, with rectangular forms. Various construction possibilities were provided for each casemate type, which could be adapted to the (wartime and terrain) conditions under which construction had to take place. The resistance capacity could also vary per building (namely W 12-15, W 15-21 or W 21-28). The first part of the V.I.S. was Part VII, Construction of heavy armed concrete shelters. It applied from the date of publication as the standard for the entire Dutch armed forces. Contrary to what the title suggests, Part VII is mainly concerned with combat positions. Only two of the ten example designs relate to shelters. The regulations from the V.I.S. were highly theoretical in nature or based on knowledge and experiences from neighbouring countries and the First World War. There were therefore various critical voices from military circles, both regarding the health risks to personnel, and in tactical-technical respects. Only after a number of V.I.S.-casemates had been constructed (in peacetime) was an exercise casemate established, intended for the training of operating personnel. This led to some modifications of the already constructed works. In the Vesting Holland, approximately 40 V.I.S.-casemates were constructed in total, of which 34 pieces at new or improved accesses in the East Front Vesting Holland.

Description

The V.I.S.-CASEMATE Hakkelaarsbrug-Noord is one of a total of six V.I.S.-casemates that were built in 1931 during the construction of the national highway Amersfoort-Amsterdam (the present-day A1). Three of these casemates were at the Hakkelaarsbrug and three to the south-east of Muiden. The V.I.S. machine-gun casemate Hakkelaarsbrug-Noord is situated slightly to the south-east of the Googweg, to the north of the national highway Amersfoort-Amsterdam (A1), approximately 400 metres from the Googweg, near the Johannes Bosboomlaan in Muiderberg. The casemate takes its name from the nearby Hakkelaarsbrug over the Naarder Trekvaart. The casemate was intended to provide flanking fire and formed part - together with the identical casemate Hakkelaarsbrug-Zuid (located in the complex Concrete Works Muiden-Muiderberg) and the now demolished gun casemate Hakkelaarsbrug-Midden - of the defensive works for the national highway constructed in 1931, which formed a new access in the inundation fields.

The casemate, executed in armed concrete, is largely hidden under a layer of earth. The work was built according to the Regulation for the Arrangement of Fortifications V.I.S. type V. The casemate is one storey high and rectangular in form, with a flat roof. On the side of the loophole for the machine gun, the walls have a thickness of 2.30 m, on the upper side there is a covering of 1.50 metres of concrete, plus a layer of earth. The funnel-shaped inner wall of this loophole is reinforced with a toothing of rail bars. The entrance is located on the left in the overlying facade. On this there is a right-angled passage, to which two rooms adjoin. The first room was a waiting room for the personnel and had a periscope, the second was the combat room for the machine gun. Both rooms have a loophole for a rifle in the direction of the passage.

Valuation

The V.I.S.-CASEMATE is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially laid out from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation equipment and firing fields. This system was supplemented with various types of constructed or arranged (defensive) works dating from different periods, which served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable terrain or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building craft, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (20th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (20th century) c. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century)

The component dates from 1931 and is an example of a casemate built according to the Regulation for the Arrangement of Fortifications. These regulations appeared between 1928 and 1935 with the aim of standardising fortifications and intended for their construction in wartime by the troops themselves.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is fairly rare because only 40 V.I.S.-casemates were constructed in the Netherlands - not all of which still exist - and because of the unique relationship with the casemate Hakkelaarsbrug-Zuid. Both casemates were to provide flanking fire for the gun casemate Hakkelaarsbrug-Midden, which has since been demolished.

* The component is reasonably well preserved and can still be easily recognised in the field.
