The register's description

Onderdeel 9. Watertoren.

Waardering

WATERTOREN van algemeen belang vanwege:

- de cultuurhistorische waarde als voor zover thans bekend oudste watertoren van Nederland;

- de architectuurhistorische waarde door zijn typologie en als belangrijk vroeg-industrieel waterwerk, tevens van belang in het oeuvre van Meesters en Eberson;

Component 9. Water Tower.

WATER TOWER belonging to the historical country estate Soestdijk. In the park stands a brick, cylindrical water tower with a diameter of 8.20 metres and a height of approximately 9 metres built in 1680 after a design by the 'fountainier' Willem Meesters. The tower is the oldest in the Netherlands and was built to supply the fountains in the garden with water and pressure. Originally built as a water reservoir, where by a windmill water from a well was pumped into a high open roof reservoir. Around 1884 the tower was rebuilt by court architect L.H. Eberson on behalf of King Willem III. In this process the round tower was covered with a tent roof (now again a flat roof). The water tower, erected on a round ground plan, has three storeys standing on a natural stone plinth and has a twelve-sided corbel marked by a natural stone semicircular-arch frieze. On the south-west side stands the three-sided terminated extension of one storey under a hipped roof covered with slate, in which the current main entrance is accommodated. In the round tower and the extension are windows of different sizes (whole and half cross windows) incorporated. The access and windows have a natural stone surround. THE INTERIOR of the tower is still partially intact, a large part of the construction that supported the mill and the basin is still present. The original location of the basin is also visible in the masonry. The mechanism of the horse mill and the ice cellar as such have disappeared. However, in the construction of the building traces of the suspension and similar elements are still present. Possibly 17th-century timber construction on the storey.

Valuation

WATER TOWER of general importance because of:

- the cultural-historical value as far as is presently known the oldest water tower in the Netherlands;

- the architectural-historical value through its typology and as an important early industrial waterwork, also of significance in the oeuvre of Meesters and Eberson;

- the ensemble values through the functional-spatial coherence between the different components of the country estate.
