Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

The construction of SHELTER TYPES 1918/I (and 1918/II) was a response to the arrival of heavy projectiles and high-explosive grenades and also formed part of the deconcentration of defensive works. According to the protection against enemy fire, a classification exists in resistance or cover classes, formed by two numbers, for example W 12-15. The first indicates that the cover is sufficient for impacts of projectiles up to that calibre (in cm); the second that protection also exists against one or at most a few impacts up to this higher calibre. Group shelters Type 1918/I (and Type 1918/II) were built according to more or less uniform or standard design in 1918 in several places in West Netherlands. The total number of built examples in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie amounts to approximately 225; the majority (approximately 165) of these still exist. The largest concentration of shelters Type 1918/I and /II is located on the Houtense Vlakte, where 147 were realised. The shelter Type 1918/I (approximately 125 pieces) was usually constructed at the front of double trench systems. The shelter Type 1918/II (approximately 100 pieces) was mostly built along the rear trench. Because the trenches and other earthworks were subsequently levelled almost everywhere, the (entrances to the) concrete shelters nowadays almost always lie partly below ground level. The entirely closed front side of the shelters was usually completely covered by earthworks that formed part of a glacis to protect the trench or a covered way. These earthworks are now mostly no longer present or only recognisable with difficulty. In a number of cases the earthing on the front side or the flank was deliberately (only partly) removed or newly applied in the years 1936-1938 to convert the then 20-year-old shelters Type 1918/I and 1918/II into machine-gun casemates. There are dozens of such rebuilt examples in the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Variants of Types 1918/I and 1918/II exist, which can be recognised among other things in the slope angle of the gorge side and by differently executed entrance openings. A series of shelters Type 1918/I was built in the slope of the glacis of the Fort at Rijnauwen.

Description

14 SHELTERS TYPE 1918/I are single-storey, usually executed in approximately 1.00 m thick reinforced cast concrete, bomb-proof, military shelters, which could provide shelter for 8 infantrymen / artillerymen, at cover class W 15-21. The shelters 1918/I were built on a rectangular ground plan, with dimensions of approximately 5.00 x 5.50 x 3.70 m, (w x d x h), the base of which is rarely visible. The visible height above ground level varies. Both blind side walls and the closed front side are executed vertically, to transition with a sharp angle into the roof plane sloping slightly backwards. This roof plane descends after a blunt angle at a slope of approximately 45° to the often not, or only partly visible, low, vertical wall on the gorge side. A variant of Type 1918/I has a less steep slope here. In a number of cases iron hooks were cast into the walls which could serve for the attachment of camouflage material. The shelters Type 1918/I were constructed as monolithic concrete works and were accessible only via one entrance opening, on the trench side - the gorge side. These eccentric, right-positioned entrances in the wall are surrounded by a thickened concrete frame, which is arranged in the same plane as the rear, sloping roof plane. Variations occur in these frames, among other things with a thickening at the top. The low-level entrances were later mostly sealed by means of masonry or concrete, but examples stuffed with rubble also occur. In a few cases the shelters remain open or have been reopened. (Remains of) doors or shutters have not been found; however, iron hooks still remain in the ceilings at the entrances, into which iron shutters could presumably be hung. In a number of cases an extra wall opening was made in the years 1936-1938 at the front, diagonally or to the side to serve as a firing port for a machine gun. With this, the function of such a work changed from shelter to that of machine-gun casemate. The interior of the shelters Type 1918/I consists of a rectangular space, located approximately half below the current ground level, which is accessible in a crouching position via the concrete staircase of a few steps located in the corner. The ceilings, located at approximately two metres above floor level and approximately one metre thick, slope slightly at the front. The shelters Type 1918/I are still provided with (partial) earth cover.

Valuation

The SHELTERS TYPE 1918/I at the Fort at Rijnauwen are of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and firing fields. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defensive) works from different periods which served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundatable areas or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century) - and on the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th and 20th century).

These are examples of reinforced concrete shelters from the period of the First World War, located in the glacis of the fort, of which at least part has original earth cover.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and with some dozens of identical and comparable examples located in the vicinity of the fort.

* The components are representative (characteristic) because they are clearly recognisable as having been added to the existing fortification system as part of a deconcentrated defence.

* The components are fairly well preserved because they are still easily recognisable in the field as built elements.
