Cluster 40.
Inleiding
KRUITHUIS, als niet bomvrije opslag en verwerkingsplaats voor buskruit en munitie. Omdat grondgedekte gebouwen te vochtig waren voor de permanente opslag van buskruit, bouwde men op belangrijke forten bovengrondse gebouwen voor de opslag daarvan in vredestijd. Pas in geval van mobilisatie werd het buskruit overgebracht naar de magazijnen in grondgedekte gebouwen.
Omschrijving
Uit één bouwlaag bestaand houten KRUITHUIS op langgerekte, rechthoekige plattegrond en gedekt door met zink belegd zadeldak, uit de periode 1877-1885. In zuidelijke kopgevel een toegang en een venster met door roeden verdeelde houten deur en raam. In oostelijke langsgevel brede toegang met dubbele, houten deuren.
Waardering
Het KRUITHUIS op het Fort bij Rijnauwen is van algemeen belang vanwege:
* Cultuurhistorische waarden als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, zoals deze is ontworpen door C.R.T. Kraijenhoff en in eerste aanleg vanaf 1815 door hem, Jan Blanken en majoor-ingenieur Willem Offerhaus is gerealiseerd en daarna door anderen gedurende ongeveer 125 jaar versterkt en verbeterd.
* Krijgshistorische waarden als onderdeel van een aaneengesloten militaire verdedigingslinie tussen de voormalige Zuiderzee en de Biesbosch. Deze bestond hoofdzakelijk uit een samenhangend systeem van inundatievelden en bijbehorende inundatiemiddelen en van schootsvelden. Dit systeem werd aangevuld met diverse, uit verschillende perioden daterende typen gebouwde of aangelegde (verdedigings)werken die dienden tot of bijdroegen aan afsluiting van niet te inunderen terreinen of andere accessen.
* Architectuurhistorische waarden, in het bijzonder als uiting van de militair-strategische bouwkunde, die gebaseerd is: - op het systeem van inundatie en accesverdediging (19de eeuw) en - op de wedloop met de zich versterkende offensieve middelen (19de eeuw).
Het betreft hier een niet bomvrije, houten opslag voor buskruit en munitie uit de periode 1877-1885.
* Ensemblewaarde en situationele waarden, als onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, alsmede vanwege de functionele en fysieke samenhang met de overige onderdelen van het complex.
* Het onderdeel is representatief (karakteristiek) omdat het nog steeds de fysieke kenmerken vertoont die destijds tot de bouw aanleiding waren.
* Het onderdeel is tamelijk gaaf bewaard omdat het zich als gebouwd element nog goed in het veld laat herkennen.

POWDER MAGAZINE, as non-bombproof storage and processing facility for gunpowder and ammunition. Because ground-covered buildings were too damp for the permanent storage of gunpowder, one built above-ground buildings for its storage in peacetime on important forts. Wooden POWDER MAGAZINE consisting of a single storey on an elongated rectangular floor plan and covered with a gabled roof covered in zinc, from the period 1877-1885.
