Inleiding
Het KLOOSTERTERREIN met GRACHT maakt onderdeel uit van het in 1950- 1953 naar ontwerp van C.H. de Bever ontstane complex Clarissenklooster Rapelenburg te Eindhoven. Het terrein is gelegen aan de rivier de Dommel in het park van het voormalige landgoed Rapelenburg, ter plaatse van het voormalige huis, karpervijver en moestuin. Het kloostercomplex is vanaf de St. Claralaan te bereiken via een brug over de gracht en de eenvoudige poort in de ommuring. Thans is de binnentuin in gebruik als begraafplaats. In het zuidwestelijk deel van de tuin, naast de sacristie, bevindt zich een niet monumentale houten carport. Achter het klooster is later een betonnen schuur gerealiseerd.
Omschrijving
Het klooster is gelegen op een omgracht KLOOSTERTERREIN. Het kloostergebouw is voorzien van een binnentuin en een tuin rondom het kloostergebouw en binnen de ommuring. De GRACHT is gegraven ten behoeve van het klooster en de zusters die in strenge afzondering leefden. Daarbij is waarschijnlijk gebruik gemaakt van de reeds hier gelegen langwerpige karpervijver. De gracht loopt aan drie zijden strak tegen de ommuring. Aan de achterzijde van het klooster sluit de slotgracht aan op de rivier de Dommel. De binnentuin is eenvoudig van opzet met grasperken en een grintpad dat aansluit op de twee ingangen naar de binnentuin. In het midden van het grintpad is een carré van grint aangebracht. De tuin rondom het kloostergebouw is grotendeels voorzien van gazons met bomen waaronder veel altijd groene coniferen, en bloemperken doorsneden door grintpaden. Aan de zuidoost zijde van het hoofdgebouw is een moestuin met perken voor snijbloemen en groenten en fruitbomen te vinden. Her en der zijn in de tuin betonnen palen te vinden, die onder andere gebruikt werden voor het ophangen van netten ter bescherming van de gewassen. Ook zijn er enkele betonnen bakken ten behoeve van de moestuin. Achter in de tuin staat een stenen beeld van het Heilig Hart van Jezus en een stenen beeld van Jozef met de jonge Jezus. De tuin aan de voorzijde van het kloostergebouw is bestraat met klinkers.
Waardering
Het KLOOSTERTERREIN met GRACHT is van algemeen belang vanwege - de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van de wijze waarop de architectuur de leefwijze van de Clarissen weerspiegelt;

Introduction
The CONVENT GROUNDS with MOAT forms part of the Clarisse Convent Rapelenburg complex at Eindhoven created in 1950-1953 to the design of C.H. de Bever. The grounds are situated on the river Dommel in the park of the former country estate Rapelenburg, on the site of the former house, carp pond and vegetable garden. The convent complex is accessible from the St. Claralaan via a bridge over the moat and the simple gate in the enclosing wall. The inner courtyard is currently in use as a cemetery. In the south-western part of the garden, next to the sacristy, there is a non-monumental wooden carport. Behind the convent a concrete shed was later constructed.
Description
The convent is situated on a moated CONVENT GROUNDS. The convent building is provided with an inner courtyard and a garden surrounding the convent building and within the enclosing wall. The MOAT was dug for the benefit of the convent and the sisters who lived in strict seclusion. In doing so, probably use was made of the already existing elongated carp pond. The moat runs along three sides flush against the enclosing wall. At the rear of the convent the perimeter moat connects with the river Dommel. The inner courtyard is of simple design with grass areas and a gravel path which connects to the two entrances to the inner courtyard. In the middle of the gravel path a square of gravel has been laid. The garden surrounding the convent building is largely provided with lawns with trees, including many evergreen conifers, and flower beds crossed by gravel paths. On the south-east side of the main building there is a vegetable garden with beds for cut flowers and vegetables and fruit trees. Here and there concrete posts can be found in the garden, which among other things were used for hanging nets to protect the crops. There are also some concrete troughs for the vegetable garden. At the back of the garden stands a stone statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a stone statue of Joseph with the young Jesus. The garden at the front of the convent building is paved with brick pavers.
Valuation
The CONVENT GROUNDS with MOAT is of general importance by reason of
- the cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as an expression of the way in which the architecture reflects the way of life of the Clarisse sisters;
- the ensemble value with respect to the functional and visual relationship between the convent, the enclosing wall, the bridge and the perimeter moat;
- the high degree of recognisability.
