Historische Tuin- en Parkaanleg.

OMSCHRIJVING

Onderdeel B/C, HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG

Tuinarchitect C.E.A. Tuinarchitect L.A.

Historic Garden and Park Layout.

DESCRIPTION

Component B/C, HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT

Shortly before the construction of the house in the years 1745-1746, Jacob Marot created a formal layout on the site, consisting principally of straight lane patterns arranged at right angles and diagonally to one another. In 1765 the terrain around the house was expanded by purchases. At that time the ice house/cellar in the western part of the park was created (see component H). The formal layout is depicted on a surveyor's map by J.G. Berger from around 1765. Garden architect J. Posth (1763-1831) was responsible in 1797 for a change to a landscape style. A number of years later (1802-1804) he designed the landscape layout at Zypendaal in Arnhem for the same Brantsen family. The cadastral map from around 1830 of Rhederoord and surroundings shows the image of a transition between formal and landscape: remnants of the formal layout are recognizable in the orchards and 'forcing gardens' directly surrounding the house, as well as in the straight western drive, a new element is an elongated watercourse, partly widened into ponds, with a pavilion beside one of the ponds. A design drawing from 1840 by the next landscape architect, Hendrik van Lunteren, has been preserved. Particularly around the house the layout has acquired a more landscape character, with flowing lines and open and closed sections. The forcing gardens to the south of the house have disappeared. Van Lunteren created expansive views both in front of and behind the house towards the IJssel and towards the hills of the Veluwezoom. In 1868 Rhederoord was redesigned, which was partly related to the construction of the railway connection Arnhem-Zutphen (1862-1865). Garden architect C.E.A. Petzold (1815-1891) carried out considerable modifications. The country estate acquired a more open character with winding paths, various vistas, furnished with a large number of tree groups. The view in the direction of the IJssel was in 1868 partially planted by Petzold with trees and shrub plantations. He also laid out, behind the house, a more or less symmetrical walk towards the hilltop. A complete planting plan with trees and shrubs has been preserved from his hand. The driveways were partly relocated and acquired a slightly curved form. At the house Petzold designed terraces with steps on the south side as a transition to the park. On the north side he designed a circular bed with fountain. Garden architect L.A. Springer (1855-1940) adapted the layout in consultation with architect J.W. Hanrath (1867-1932) who carried out alterations to the house around 1912. The ancillary buildings in the forecourt were demolished to create new views. The balustrades on the south side and the forecourt date from this period. Springer re-laid out the flower beds on the terraces.

Central to the country estate stands the house Rhederoord (component A) on a height. Thanks to the high location one has a fine view in the southern direction from the house. The house is accessible via two curved driveways. The western driveway begins at the Hoofdstraat and nowadays has an avenue planting with oaks, beeches and horse chestnuts. The eastern driveway begins at the Parkweg and is planted with impressive beeches. The beginning of both the western and the eastern driveway is marked by two columns and wrought iron (component M and N). Also at both entrances stands a porter's lodge (component F and G). The terrain between the Hoofdstraat and the driveways, as well as towards Veluwezoom still has in important measure the character of the layout designed by Petzold. It comprises in broad outline an open pasture area planted with scattered tree groups. Among these tree groups are a pair of special tree groups planted in the years 1868-1869. These consist of a group of four and a group of six Sequoiadendrons which are among the most successful older plantings of mammoth trees in the Netherlands. In the lower lying part of the forecourt along the Hoofdstraat lie elongated, somewhat winding, pond features. On the east side of the forecourt are the former orangery (not protected) and a former, walled vegetable garden (component O).

Worthy of mention are the open sections directly at the house with among others rhododendrons and conifers. In the southern direction lies the park meadow with tree groups designed by Petzold. In the northern direction is an elongated vista, furnished with tree groups and shrubs (rhododendrons). Furthermore in this part of the country estate are a hill with an ice cellar inside, upon which the remnants of a pavilion (component H), and near the Parkweg the former carriage house (component D).

The house is on three sides largely surrounded by a mortared RETAINING WALL with TERRACES between this wall and the house with flower beds. On the north side the gardens of the forecourt are separated by wrought iron fencing. The retaining wall has on the south side in the middle and at the corners projecting sections and was originally provided with a natural stone balustrade of which parts still exist. The terrace adjoining the retaining wall has an L-shape and is located on the south and east side of the house. On the south side are two rectangular lawns surrounded on three sides by paths, each of which has a layout consisting of five circles connected to one another executed in double rows of boxwood with spaces for flower beds. On the east side is a lawn. Adjoining this terrace is a second higher situated terrace directly surrounding the house and separated from the lowest terrace by means of a hard stone-topped L-shaped wall. Both terraces are accessible by means of four hard stone steps. These steps are located respectively at the height of the central projection of the house, at the extreme left thereof, at the corner of the two legs of the L-shaped wall and on the east side. On the south side is a rectangular lawn surrounded by a path with a centrally located pond surrounded by ivy, with on either side a parterre formed by a rectangle with three-quarter circles at the corners and on the long sides a semi-circle in the middle. The figure is filled with double rows of boxwood. In each figure in the middle is a circular boxwood hedge. On the corners of the lawn are two ball-shaped clipped yews. On the sides of the side gables are lawns. The lawn on the east side has on the side of the retaining wall a low boxwood hedge. The forecourt has the shape of a half elliptical arc with adjoining two half elliptical arcs. The retaining wall which follows this form is constructed of brick and is finished with natural stone. The position of the early balusters is recognizable. On the north-west side is a broad hard stone staircase of four steps to the lawn of the strongly undulating park.
