Inleiding

Introduction

The former ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE HALL of the Holland Amerika Line (HAL) for trans-Atlantic passenger ships.

Since the development of the new port area on the southern Meuse bank, second half of the nineteenth century, the Prinsessekade has been in use for freight traffic and emigrants to America. The origin of the HAL lies in the firm Plate, Reuchlin & Co, which established itself from 1873 as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaanse Stoomvaart-Maatschappij at this quay. The shipping company rented a section of this quay with various warehouses (with a total length of 700 metres), an office, the arrival and departure hall and a workshop building. From 1891 the quay was named after (then) princess Wilhelmina. In 1896 the name Holland-Amerika Lijn was added to the name of the shipping company. In 1901 the company built a distinctive office building on the tip of the Wilhelminapier, the current Hotel New York.

Due to the bombardment of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, a large part of the HAL buildings at the Wilhelminapier was destroyed. Immediately after the occupation, new warehouses were erected here. Between 1946 and 1949, a total of five warehouses were built, all named after different port cities (Philadelphia, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York and Rotterdam). Four warehouses have disappeared, the fifth called 'loods Rotterdam' on the north quay of the pier is the arrival and departure hall described here.

The 'loods Rotterdam' was erected in 1949 in New Functionalist style by architects J.A. Brinkman, J.H. van den Broek and J.B. Bakema.

In 1972 the HAL ceased its regular services from Rotterdam under pressure from air transport competition. The arrival and departure hall has been in use since 1988 as a space for exhibitions, trade fairs, congresses and parties. The restored arrival hall has been called a cruise terminal since 1999 and houses, among other things, 'café Rotterdam'. Since 2000, an increasing number of cruise ships (approximately twenty per year) visit Rotterdam, so that the quay is coming back to life in its former glory.

Description

The former ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE HALL is characterised by the application of six concrete cylindrical shell roofs. This roof construction was applied here for the first time in our country. The building, 135 metres long, is a concrete structure two storeys high and is closed at the top by six cylindrical shell roofs with a span of 18 metres. At both ends, the short sides, the roofs slope upwards. On the quay side, the storey is set back slightly, creating a balcony along the full length of the façade. It is screened with a steel railing.

On the street side, the space under the storey is open and is separated from the street by the column structure. This space is used as a loading platform. The façades of the storey consist of five concrete semi-circular openings filled with glass in steel windows with glazing bars. On the water side, the façade, for an unobstructed view of the water, consists of entirely glazed frontage with steel windows with glazing bars. The concrete components of the building are painted white, the windows grey. In the interior there are, among other things, a monumental concrete staircase and striking conveyor belts.
