Inleiding

- als toonbeeld van vernieuwende winkelarchitectuur in de zich sterk ontwikkelende consumptiemaatschappij na de Tweede Wereldoorlog;

- vanwege het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van vooruitstrevende nieuw zakelijke vormgeving en materiaalgebruik in de vroege wederopbouwperiode;

- vanwege het belang van het pand in het oeuvre van het architectenbureau Van den Broek en Bakema, dat een van de meest toonaangevende architectenbureaus in de wederopbouwperiode is;

- vanwege hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering en de vrijwel gave staat waarin deze bewaard zijn gebleven;

Introduction

'Shoe warehouse HUF', SHOP PREMISES with above OFFICE SPACE and SERVICE DWELLING, built in 1953-1954 on the commission of N.V. Anton Huf jr. and situated at the intersection of Hoogstraat and Westewagenstraat. The design is by the architectural firm Van den Broek and Bakema which in the reconstruction period in Rotterdam city centre designed a large number of new shop premises, including the shopping centre 'De Lijnbaan'. The architecture of the Huf premises displays a for the firm characteristic, new business formal language. The high volume of the premises stems from urban planning requirements for the reconstruction area around the historic Laurenskerk which aimed at a building pattern with alternating high and low volumes. For this reason an office function was added to the building programme. The public space between the Huf premises and the adjacent department store 'Galeries Modernes' was designed in conjunction with the shop premises and provided with spatial design that was to connect shop spaces and shopping street. Of the spatial elements, including exterior display windows and a kiosk, little remains, but the transparent shop base of Huf is still recognisable despite the replacement of the display windows and is characteristic of the pronounced relationship between interior and exterior in the original design.

The former shop space has since been subdivided into multiple shop units. In 2009 a restoration and redevelopment was completed, in which the office storeys were provided with thin double glazing and external sun protection and the entrance to the offices was enlarged. The service dwelling was renovated and functionally integrated with the offices.

Description

Completely detached, with basement and flat roof SHOP PREMISES with above OFFICE SPACE and SERVICE DWELLING, at the corner of Hoogstraat and Westewagenstraat. The building has five storeys of which the first two storeys on the north side (4e Westewagenhof) are extended. On the roof is a single-storey, elongated service dwelling which is set back in relation to the Hoogstraat. Basement, ground floor and first floor comprise shop and warehouse spaces, with entrances on the Hoogstraat and Westewagenstraat and loading accesses on the 4e Westewagenhof. The three storeys above with rental office spaces are as is the service dwelling separately accessible via a side entrance in the east facade (Vlasmarkt). The construction of the main volume consists of a concrete skeleton with cantilever floors on round concrete columns, whereby no columns are present in the facades and flexible layout and transparent facade treatment is possible. The image-defining appearance in the streetscape is to a significant extent derived from the transparent superstructure with office storeys. The expression of the building is further determined by vertical articulation in three zones which also expresses the different functions in the premises. The ground floor consists on three sides of slightly recessed display windows of glass in slender profiles (material replaced). The largely closed north side at the loading court is executed in black glazed brick and fitted with a concrete loading platform. The shop base is separated from the transparent superstructure by a cantilevered magazine storey on all sides. A deep narrow window strip above the shop display windows reinforces the projecting effect of the magazine storey. The facades of this intermediate zone are robust in character with open and closed facade elements of shock concrete elements with steel windows, set between horizontal concrete bands. The three transparent office storeys are completely enclosed by curtain facades composed of slender steel profiles, originally fitted with single glazing. The concrete floors visible behind the facade provide the facade with horizontal articulation, which is reinforced by the use of coloured glass at the level of these floors. The lower part of the shop windows on each storey was originally fitted with wired glass. On the north and east sides in the location of the stairwell and adjacent corridors, profiled aluminium cladding was used instead of glass. At the rear of the building a freestanding steel spiral staircase which from all office storeys provides an escape route to the roof of the extension projecting at the rear. The service dwelling on the roof is constructed by means of a concrete skeleton which is partly placed outside the facade. The sand-lime brick facades are, with the exception of some facade areas on the terrace side, painted black. Characteristic is the use of continuous window strips at the top of the outer facades and interior walls whereby the roof is visually lifted and in the interior the spatiality is increased. Further remarkable are the horizontally sliding windows. In the interior the visible load-bearing structure and the still well-recognisable main structure of undivided office storeys and a stairwell set apart in the north-east corner with adjacent lift and service rooms are of particular importance. In the dwelling some elements from the former layout and fittings have been preserved including the former kitchen with terrazzo worktop. On the facade and at the roof edge were proudly displayed neon letters with the company name Huf (no longer present).

Valuation

The former shoe warehouse 'Huf', consisting of the SHOP PREMISES with OFFICE STOREYS and SERVICE DWELLING, built in the period 1953-1954 to the design of Van den Broek and Bakema is of general importance on account of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning values:

- as exemplar of innovative shop architecture in the rapidly developing consumer society after the Second World War;

- on account of its particular significance for the history of architecture, as an example of progressive new business formal design and material use in the early reconstruction period;

- on account of the significance of the premises in the oeuvre of the architectural firm Van den Broek and Bakema, which was one of the most leading architectural firms in the reconstruction period;

- on account of high-quality aesthetic qualities in main form, material use and detailing and the virtually intact condition in which these have been preserved;

- on account of the great interweaving of the architecture of the building and the urban planning situation, which has also contributed to the particular spatial form of the object and on account of the image-defining value as a prominent element in Rotterdam city centre.
