Omschrijving

Description

HUNTING LODGE / COUNTRY RESIDENCE / COUNTRY HOUSE located in the park 'De Hoge Veluwe', part of the country estate 'Sint Hubertus', designed by H.P. Berlage (1914-1920) commissioned by the married couple A.G. Kröller and H.E.L.J. Kröller-Müller. The construction of the house was carried out by the The Hague firm Nederlandsche Aannemings Maatschappij v/h H.F. Boersma. Architect H. van de Velde completed the work after Berlage's departure in 1919. Besides Berlage and Van de Velde, the artists B. van der Leck and professor A. Hennig from Bunzlau made an important contribution. B. van der Leck is responsible for the finishing of the interior spaces. A. Hennig designed the stained-glass windows in the hall. Various sculptures were made by J. Mendes da Costa and belong to the art collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum.

The house consists of a rectangular main block with a tower and two wings. The main living quarters are located in the main block on the pond side (south-west façade). On the court side there is the entrance at an octagonal inner courtyard, enclosed by the north-east façade of the main block, the two angled wings, the entrance gates and the rear building (kennels, bicycle storage, storage). The wings contain the sleeping, guest and service quarters. The inner courtyard of the hunting lodge is octagonal and is formed by a diamond-shaped square with bevelled corners. The courtyard is accessible via two gates. The floor consists of brick pavers with clinker tiling along the façades, on the flight mound and the outer kennel. Centrally in the symmetrical façade on the courtyard side, on the ground floor there is the entrance in an internal portico under a canopy. The façade on the upper storey is set back. On either side of the entrance section there is a wing consisting of a storey which, with a bend, encloses the courtyard. Centrally in the façade there is a substantial roof pavilion. At the ends of the façades are two bends which connect to the walls and gates which then connect to the rear building opposite the entrance. Benches and reliefs are incorporated in the walls. The central part of the symmetrical façade on the pond side consists of two storeys with on the ground floor seven regularly distributed windows with on either side an extension veranda. The terrace between the verandas is covered by a pergola. On the upper storey there are also seven regularly distributed windows with on either side a balcony, accessible via a door with side windows. The façade is finished with a hipped roof, behind which the tower stands. On the short sides of the pond façade a semicircular room is built out, enclosed by a semicircular roof interrupted by a low roof-dormer strip. The left room has a high series of windows placed in the façade, the right one has continuous windows with the same height as those of the living room. The south-east façade is the section where the former private rooms of the married couple Kröller-Müller are located. The façade is, although mirrored, virtually identical to the north-west façade. At the far left there is a semicircular tea room followed by the straight side of the main block with on the ground floor, the bay window added in 1918 to the sitting room of the lady. On the upper storey is the broad roof pavilion of the former linen room with above it the dormer of the billiards room. To the right of the straight façade of the main block a tall building mass with balcony after which the façade wall bends diagonally forward at the height of the gentleman's sitting room. On the upper storey again a broad roof pavilion, this time of the former children's playroom. The façade bends back again, consisting of two storeys with corner balconies. The façade ends in a low, shallow section that connects to the wall and gate that enclose the courtyard. The north-west façade is, although in mirror image, virtually identical to the south-east façade with at the far left the short side that connects to the wall and gate that enclose the courtyard, a short façade, the long façade with roof pavilion angled in relation to the main block and the main block itself with a roof pavilion. At the far right a semicircular smoking room. The tall tower with square ground plan is finished with a gabled roof. The tower stands free of the building mass from level 3 onwards. At that level on the pond side there is a three-sided extended stairwell with at the sides a triangular loggia. At the height of levels 4 through 6 the façades are unmodeled and blank, with the exception of the chimney on the courtyard side and a narrow, continuous window on the pond side. At the height of level 7 the tower projects slightly at the corners and is provided with narrow windows. Level 8 contains the tower room, provided with small corner balconies and on all sides of glass, except where the chimney and stairs are. In the top gable on the pond side is a stylized representation of stag antlers with a cross. The façades, especially the east façade, suffered from machine-gun fire in September 1944. The rear building consisting of a storey is provided with a rectangular ground plan with two short, angled wings. On the front side is an outer kennel for dogs enclosed by a gate. Centrally there are entrances to the inner kennel with above it a bell. On either side of the kennels there is a storage room with at the rear an automobile parking space. At the short sides there is an opening. On the pond side there is a long brick retaining wall with slate coping, which extends on either side of the house with at its ends an identical pavilion. The pavilions consist of a low brick base and continuous window strip which is only interrupted by the chimney and the glazed entrance section which is oriented towards the house. The pavilions are finished with a round tent roof covered with slates. The interior together with the exterior forms a total concept, whereby the design for the finishing of the walls was made by B. van der Leck, the stained-glass work by A. Hennig and the furniture both by Berlage and Van de Velde.
