Inleiding

Description
Description complex component A
Introduction
Former DISINFECTION BUILDING, forming part of the Quarantine facility complex dating from 1930-1933, centrally situated on the Quarantine site near the jetty on the Nieuwe Maas with the long sides parallel to the main accesses of the site and executed in pragmatic-expressionistic style. The cleaning building consists of three separate parts: a BATHHOUSE on the north side, a BOILER HOUSE on the south side and the actual DISINFECTION BUILDING in between. In the disinfection building, contaminated goods were disinfected in two special ovens (larger and smaller) by means of vacuum formaldehyde and steam. The great height of the roof truss is related to the removal of the vapours released during the disinfection process and the presence of an entresol where the disinfection cabins for clothing are located. For the rafters a construction was used that could accommodate temperature differences.
The boilers from the boiler house have been removed and transferred to a museum environment.
Description
The DISINFECTION BUILDING, which is erected on a largely rectangular floor plan, has one storey and a high roof space and consists of three separate parts: the 'BATHHOUSE' on the north side with a partly still present reception and departure room, where toilet, shaving room and a complete bathing installation, the 'BOILER HOUSE' in the extension on the south side and the 'DISINFECTION BUILDING' in between which is built higher in the actual disinfection section and has an entresol with ventilation grille. The bathhouse and the disinfection building are completely separated into a clean and unclean section. At the level of the extension on the east and west sides, the disinfection building has a high transverse roof. In particular, this higher built volume has a special roof truss construction of double wooden beams connected with screws and bolts, allowing the beam parts expanded by heat to be easily adjusted or replaced. The long east and west gables have identical articulation with in the lower part, from north to south respectively three narrow windows, followed by nine tall twelve-pane windows after which - just below the roof edge - a long strip of twelve low six-pane windows flanked by two small windows. In the higher cross volume on the ground floor, beneath a drip moulding, are three window sections with vertical window division. Above this the high space within the building is lit by a strip of nine low six-pane windows and just below the roof edge tall fifteen-pane windows. In the southernmost part following are two six-pane windows and two simple square windows. In the ridge of this volume on either side a wooden ventilation grille and the high brick chimney of the disinfection oven. The north gable has a symmetrical layout with on either side two lower extensions covered with hipped roofs in which a double wooden door flanked by small windows. In the recessed higher built part on the ground floor three tall windows with small glazing bars flanked by narrow windows with the same glazing bars. Just below the ridge of the hipped roof, over the full width of the gable, a strip of twelve low ten-pane windows. The south gable is likewise symmetrical in layout and has in the middle a lower extension with centrally beneath a drip moulding an entrance section with four doors flanked by two wide windows with small glazing bars. Above the entrance a tall fanlight at the top opening into a ventilation grille provided with a small hipped roof. The higher built recessed building volumes have on either side beneath a drip moulding a simple double door and just below the ridge of the roof on either side a strip of four low ten-pane windows.
Valuation
Former DISINFECTION BUILDING consisting of former BATHHOUSE, BOILER HOUSE and DISINFECTION SECTION, with high roof truss constructed of wood, as a visually defining and historically functional component of the Quarantine facility complex built in 1930-1933, of general significance due to its culture- and architectural-historical value, as well as due to its ensemble and situational value in relation to the surrounding complex components.
