Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 7: GRAFKAPEL.
- vanwege de functionele en beeldbepalende betekenis in het complex;
- als gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een neogotisch mausoleum uit omstreeks 1865 van een adellijke familie van een Limburgse buitenplaats;

Description
Description of component 7: FUNERAL CHAPEL.
Beside the church on the east side of the park on the churchyard, a chapel designed in 1864-1865 by Charles Weber in neo-Gothic style, built on a cruciform plan and covered by gabled roofs covered with copper slate in a cross pattern. The roof is crowned by an octagonal marl stone base on which a cross. Originally the base was surrounded by eight flying buttresses springing from the crossing. The chapel, built in marl, has an entrance on the south (church) side and on the west (castle) side. Both consist of a pointed-arch-shaped marl stone profiled surround within which a double wooden entrance door is closed by a marl stone lintel above which a fanlight in leaded glass, with a pattern of four quatrefoil windows with a round window between them and in the middle. The entrance facing the castle shows above the door a marl stone round coat-of-arms plaque with the two coats of arms of the family De Loë-Wolff Metternich. The entrance on the church side is preceded by a natural stone entrance steps of two treads. The other two façades are blank except for a window in both façades as aforementioned fanlight. The façades are finished with diagonally placed buttresses, of which the buttresses on either side of the two entrances are carried higher than the remaining buttresses. These higher buttresses were originally crowned by pinnacles. The chapel was built by order of Otto Napoleon H.M. Baron de Loë Imstenraedt as a resting place for his second wife Johanna Gravin Wolff Metternich zu Gracht who died in 1864. Permission for the consecration of the chapel took place on 15 December 1865. In the park a sight line was left open between castle and chapel, as can still be seen to this day.
Valuation
The FUNERAL CHAPEL at castle Mheer is of general cultural-historical importance:
- because of its functional and visually defining significance in the complex;
- as an intact preserved example of a neo-Gothic mausoleum from around 1865 of a noble family of a Limburg country estate;
- because of the visual relationship with castle and park.
