Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 4: HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG.

Description
Description of component 4: HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT.
The park layout at castle Mheer came into being relatively late and is a continuation of the 19th-century building activities of the De Loë family, as described in the complex description. The layout is situated on the north, west and south sides of the castle and the farmyard. The formal layout directly adjoining the north gable is contemporary (20th century). However, also by L. Springer a geometric garden was designed here around 1920, to which the long extended form refers.
The enclosed garden directly adjoining the west gable likewise has a more recent 20th-century character.
The historical layout consists in broad outline of two parts separated by the long straight lane in a westerly direction. To the northwest of this lane is the more differentiated landscape part of the layout with circulating paths, tree groups and individual trees. To the south of the lane is a large open undulating building and pasture land in which scattered are a few tree groups. These must originally have formed part of a system of sight lines with accompanying planting.
The lane itself has been recently planted (20th century) with two rows of lime trees. The place where the lane crosses the western transverse lane is marked by a gate and four chestnut trees.
The landscape layout in the northwestern part is still recognizable from the alternation of some open spaces, bordered by tree groups with paths, further individual trees and planting strips. Components of these can be traced back to the different designs including by Custodis and Fuchs. The fairly large variety of old solitary trees is now less distinct due to later vegetation. The most striking tree here is literally and figuratively the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), which with its trunk circumference of 6.20m. is presumed to be the largest in the Netherlands. Part of the paths is now no longer recognizable, making a proper walking circuit impossible.
An important element in the various designs are the sight lines from the house in a northwesterly direction. These are still recognizable but partly disturbed by later planting.
Valuation
The HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT of castle Mheer is of general cultural-historical importance as an example of a relatively modest landscape layout in which optimal use was made of the natural character of the landscape.
