Omschrijving
1. Een kleine rechthoekige omgrachte structuur, waarop het speelhuis is gelegen;

Description
Description
HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historical garden and park layout of De Bol consists of two parts:
1. A small rectangular moated structure, on which the pleasure house is situated;
2. A very spacious square open area situated against the structure described under 1., surrounded by a moated lane, within which a cruciform lane system, likewise provided with ditches on both sides, dividing said area into 4 square spaces (grassland). The lanes are largely planted with ash trees, interspersed with hawthorn. The centre of the cross is marked by a multiple circular planting of chestnuts. The design of this square plantation is first visible on a map by Nicolaas van Geelkercken from c. 1640 (Gelders Archief Arnhem) and is referred to there as the "Kamp alleen" or "Vier Perken". This layout came into being around 1640 at the behest of the Count of Culemborg Phillips Theodoor van Waldeck Pyrmont. During the French occupation in 1672-1673 the avenue trees were felled, while according to a map from 1749 they were replanted. According to a report from 1788 (mentioned in Beltjes and Schipper, 'Culemborg: beeld van een stad', p.183) the plantation consisted of "fine walks" which however were "too sparsely visited, too little esteemed". From 1859 until the first half of the 20th century the pleasure house and associated layout served as Campagna, a country residence of the Jesuit Fathers. The layout created in the first half of the 17th century has been preserved intact in structure to the present day and is a unique example in the Netherlands of a Renaissance layout associated with a pleasure house. As such, De Bol still belongs to the Renaissance tradition of a geometric or formal layout, in which the main building does not form the hierarchical centre of the complex's design, but rather the layout is situated to the side of the house.
