Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

- vanwege de 19de-eeuwse aanleg in landschapsstijl met behoud van de 18de-eeuwse middenlaan en de formele rechthoekige kavelstructuur;

- als voorbeeld van een gaaf bewaard slingerend lanenpatroon mogelijk naar ontwerp van J.Copijn (1871);

Description of component 2:

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.

A small-scale landscape design around the house from the second quarter of the 19th century, well preserved in structure and detail, and a landscape park extending towards the south possibly designed by J. Copijn (1871) on commission of Prince Willem Frederik Hendrik. The layout covered a large site currently distinguished in the properties Prins Hendrikoord and Vijferhof—both west of the Soestdijkerweg—Ernst Sillemhoeve and Ewijckshoeve excluding the house with its immediate surroundings. At a change of ownership in 1926 part of the layout was added to the house. Layout at the house. From the Soestdijkerweg a curved drive lined with green and copper beech trees leads to the house, flanked on the north side by the Pijnenburger Grift or Praamgracht which winds in an easterly direction before the house. Before the house lies a lawn sloping down to this watercourse, which there has been excavated into a pond in landscape style. The front of the house offers a wide view over the lawn, the pond and a meadow on the woods of Lage Vuursche and Soestdijk. The landscape character is strengthened by the planting with solitary trees and tree groups (copper beeches). To the west of the house lies an elongated wooded strip with a walking path following the watercourse. Along the path unilateral avenue planting of copper beeches. In the wood stands a concrete air-raid shelter (c.1950), accessible from the basement of the house. Behind the wooded strip lies the original rectangular vegetable and nursery garden (now grassland). From the rear facade of the house there is—across a lawn with a single solitary tree—likewise a clear view over a meadow with undulating edge planting of beeches; the park wood extends behind it. The park wood is situated within the rectangular field structure, with the winding lanes and paths pattern grouped on either side of a north-south running central axis, the Koninginnelaan. The house is situated to the west of this central axis. The originally 18th-century avenue, planted with beech and young oak, continues outside the boundary of the country estate and was probably a clearing road. The paths and lanes structure (beech and oak) runs in generous curves; the paths converge at the end of the plot in a generous roundabout. Centrally in the wood, to the south of Alexanderhoeve, lies a large rhododendron group, which marks the transition from the park wood to a more intensively used wood. On the (situation) map of D.F. Tersteeg (1912-1913) it can be seen that to the west of this group a maze and a winding copse were situated; now only a viewing mound at the edge is visible, which probably dates from the same period.

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Ewijckshoeve of general importance:

- because of the 19th-century layout in landscape style with preservation of the 18th-century central avenue and the formal rectangular field structure;

- as an example of a well-preserved winding lanes pattern possibly designed by J. Copijn (1871);

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
