Inleiding
GYMNASTIEKGEBOUW met twee gymnastieklokalen, naar zakelijk-expressionistisch ontwerp van J. Poot jr. en W. Dahlen, deel uitmakend van het SCHOLENCOMPLEX "Zwartewaalstraat", gebouwd in twee fasen. Het eerste, meest zuidoostelijk gelegen gymnastieklokaal, is gebouwd in 1928-1929 en bij de bouw van een tweede schoolgebouw werd in 1929-1930 een tweede gymnastieklokaal toegevoegd.
Omschrijving
Het gymnastiekgebouw is opgetrokken op een U-vormige plattegrond en omvat een bouwlaag onder een zadeldak met rode pannen. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in baksteen en bevat houten vensterkozijnen met een natuurstenen onderdorpel. De gevel die is gericht op de Gaesbeekstraat wordt gedomineerd door drie grote puntgevels, met daarin telkens drie smalle, hoge vensters. De gevel aan de Hoogvlietstraat bestaat uit twee grote puntgevels met daartussen een lager gedeelte met in het midden twee lage brede vensters en aan weerszijden twee getoogde deuren. De zuidgevel die is gericht op het speelpleintje is vrijwel identiek aan die gericht op de Gaesbeekstraat met drie puntgevels met daarin smalle lange vensters, maar bevat aan weerszijden dubbele getoogde deuren. De achtergevels bevatten ieder drie maal drie smalle, hoge vensters. De plattegronden van de twee gymnastieklokalen zijn gespiegeld, waarbij zich in de vleugel aan de Hoogvlietstraat de kleed- en wasruimten bevinden terwijl zich in de dwarse vleugels de gymnastiekzalen bevinden.
Waardering
Uit 1928-1930 daterend gymnastiekgebouw in zakelijk-expressionistische trant als historisch-functioneel onderdeel van het Scholencomplex "Zwartewaalstraat" van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische, cultuurhistorische, typologische, stedenbouwkundige en ensemblewaarde. Tevens van belang als karakteristiek voorbeeld van het complexmatige schooltype dat tot stand kwam onder de verantwoordelijkheid van architect A. van der Steur in de periode dat hij chef was van de Hoofdafdeling III Stadsuitbreiding en Gebouwen van de Rotterdamse Dienst Gemeentewerken.

Description
The gymnasium building is erected on a U-shaped ground plan and comprises one storey under a gabled roof with red tiles. The building is erected in brick and contains wooden window frames with a natural stone sill. The facade facing Gaesbeekstraat is dominated by three large pointed gables, each containing three narrow, tall windows. The facade on the Hoogvlietstraat consists of two large pointed gables with between them a lower section with in the middle two low wide windows and on either side two arched doors. The south facade facing the playground is virtually identical to the one facing Gaesbeekstraat with three pointed gables containing narrow long windows, but contains on either side double arched doors. The rear facades each contain three times three narrow, tall windows. The ground plans of the two gymnasium halls are mirrored, with the changing and wash rooms situated in the wing on the Hoogvlietstraat while the gymnasium halls are situated in the transverse wings.
Valuation
Gymnasum building dating from 1928-1930 in functional-expressionist style as historical-functional component of the School Complex "Zwartewaalstraat" of general importance because of the architectural-historical, cultural-historical, typological, urban planning and ensemble value. Also of importance as a characteristic example of the complex-based school type that came into being under the responsibility of architect A. van der Steur in the period when he was head of the Main Department III Urban Expansion and Buildings of the Rotterdam Municipal Works Service.
