Omschrijving

HOOFDGEBOUW (Bouvigne).

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- als voorbeeld van een in oorsprong vijftiende-eeuws kasteel dat in circa 1615 zijn huidige vorm heeft verkregen;

- vanwege de architectuur- en bouwhistorische waarde van in- en exterieur;

- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de aanleg;

Description

MAIN BUILDING (Bouvigne). The moated house, erected on a rectangular ground plan, was built in various phases; the western part with the tower represents the oldest, presumably 15th-century, phase of the house; in the 16th century (second quarter) the house was extended with an east facade and subsequently built around 1615 into its present block-shaped form. In 1802 the cross windows were replaced by sash windows, whereby the old relieving arches above the windows were retained. The house has undergone two restorations: in 1931-1932 under the direction of engineer A.J. van der Steur and in 1975-1977 under the direction of engineer J. de Wilde. The brick house with white ledge stone courses consists of a basement, two storeys and an attic under two slate-covered gabled roofs connected by a roof truss structure. On the northwest corner stands a hexagonal tower built up from a basement and four storeys under a hexagonal spire clad with zinc slates topped with a pear-shaped finial with weather vane. The tower contains cloister windows and, on the bel-étage since 1911, ten (originally eighteen) stained glass windows depicting scenes of Amor and Psyche from the Schouten atelier from Delft. The north facade and part of the east facade have a different format brick and partly no ledge stone courses. All facades show regular articulation with multi-pane windows. The five-bay-wide front facade has a rectangularly projecting entrance bay with a double arched entrance door set in a sandstone carved door surround with lion heads. The gaping jaws of the lions were used for the chains of the old drawbridge. In the INTERIOR, the ground plan with central hall and staircase with rooms arranged around it is noteworthy, as is the stucco ceiling in Louis XVI style in a lower room.

Valuation

MAIN BUILDING (Bouvigne), belonging to the historic country estate complex Bouvigne, is of general cultural-historical and architectural importance:

- on account of its age;

- as an example of a castle originally 15th-century that acquired its present form around 1615;

- on account of the architectural and building-historical value of interior and exterior;

- on account of its characteristic location within the layout;

- on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
