The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Free-standing, against the background of a forest and to the south-west of the bunker Diogenes located, relatively solitary bunker - now on the terrain of the National Park De Hoge Veluwe - and situated in the south-eastern contact area of this terrain with the Koningsweg. The bunker was built in 1943, possibly as a transformer house / electricity house. At macro level the bunker is part of a large military airfield structure from the period 1940-1945, at meso level of a complex of originally some tens of military buildings arranged in a villa-village-like structure, and at micro level it is a functional and morphological unit with the annexe command bunker Diogenes constructed in reinforced concrete. The building is currently in use as a bat shelter.

Description

Reinforced concrete single-storey BUNKER, possibly built as a transformer house / electricity house, on a rectangular floor plan and covered by a flat reinforced concrete roof. The bunker measures approximately 10 x 7.5 x 4 m and the greatest length extends from north to south. All corners of facades to roof are rounded, while the west facade and the adjoining parts of the north and south facades up to approximately one third of the total height are provided with a 10 cm pronounced concrete plinth. The north gable / main gable contains on the left an access opening, which is almost entirely bricked up and on the right two openings which were possibly intended for ventilation and / or served as a gas lock. The south gable facing the Koningsweg contains two comparable openings and a downward-curved pipe. The east and west facades are blank. At the foot of the building there are pits or ducts along at least three facades, sometimes with visible climbing irons and otherwise with a heavy concrete cover plate, which suggests that there are one or more underground spaces or passages. The concrete path to bunker Diogenes could be the ceiling of a communication trench or a cable duct. The interior is not accessible, but contains according to photographs taken through the access on the north side, a passage bricked up with calcium silicate brick at the end of a short passage with a ceiling supported by sheet iron, in which on the right an open door to a space.

Valuation

BUNKER, possibly built as a transformer house / electricity house, of general importance as a rare and relatively well-preserved component of a military camp dating from the Second World War and established by the German occupier as part of a large military airfield, on account of: military and cultural-historical, situational and complex and ensemble values, which may be apparent inter alia from the specific location in the direct proximity of and the relationship with the command centre, the bunker Diogenes, and from the coherence of and with the total airfield concept and the spatial main lines and components of the annexe camp.
