Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ENTRANCE GATE to the estate De Hoge Veluwe, designed in 1920 by A.J. Kropholler. The gate leads to the Kemperbergeerweg and is located in the south-eastern enclosure of the estate at the level of Schaarsbergen.
From 1909 onwards the estate De Hoge Veluwe came into being through the purchase and consolidation of land by the Rotterdam industrialist couple Helene Müller (1869-1939) and Anthony G. Kröller (1862-1941). The old public roads that crossed the land were closed and diverted at the cost of Kröller. Around the newly created, approximately 6800 ha large estate came an enclosure. This new country seat created by the couple served firstly as a hunting ground and country residence for the family and their guests. A farming operation was also conducted on the estate. Furthermore, within De Hoge Veluwe was realised the artistic ideal that Helene Müller envisaged. The grounds were arranged at her instigation with architecture and artworks, which each in their own way were to make visible the unity of art and nature advocated by her. Finally, a large museum building was to be realised on the grounds to house the art collection of Mrs. Kröller.
For the purpose of arranging the estate the couple managed to engage various architects. From H.P. BERLAGE, the Belgian HENRY VAN DE VELDE and from A.J. KROPHOLLER buildings were actually constructed on the estate. The sculptural works to be included in the complex are by the sculptors J. MENDES DA COSTA and JOHN RAEDECKER.
Following the economic crisis the management of the estate was transferred in 1928 to the Stichting Kröller-Müller. In 1935 the Stichting Het Nationale Park de Hoge Veluwe was established.
The estate is bounded by a kilometres-long enclosure, with monumental ENTRANCE GATES at important locations. The entrance gates are all comparably designed, with small variations, according to designs by Kropholler from 1920. In addition to keeping game contained, the gates and enclosure were an expression of the fact that the couple regarded their acquired territory as a unity and saw themselves as large landowners. There were plans to realise small settlements at the entrances. Although this scarcely came to fruition, such an arrangement is present in outline at the entrance on the Harskampweg and at the service entrance on the Apeldoornseweg.
Description
ENTRANCE GATE consisting of four brick pillars connected by wrought iron gate works, whereby the middle pillars have carriage gates. The square pillars are laid in brick (English bond) and covered with sandstone coping stones. The copings of the middle pillars are higher and are cut on the front with the name of the estate: 'Hooge'/'Veluwe'. The copings of the outer pillars are set slightly inward in relation to the pillar. The wrought iron gate works are painted green. The fixed gates stand on a brick wall and have simple vertical bars. The two moveable gates of the carriage gate are attached to wrought iron columns, which are in turn connected by narrow wrought iron intermediate sections which are in turn attached to the brick pillars with iron bands. These sections are as well as the swinging gates closed three-sided at the top, and filled with geometric wrought ironwork.
