Omschrijving onderdeel 5

Description
Description component 5
FOREBURGH CONSISTING OF BRIDGE, GATE AND DONJON with "NEW BUILDING" and JESUIT BUILDING. The foreburgh is accessible by means of a 16th-century brick arch bridge to the gate passage from 1548 with to its left a fifteenth-century donjon in Gothic style and to its right the so-called new building (1941, reconstruction after war damage, architect J. Magis), continuing into the Jesuit Building (1907-1909, architect J. Dony) and refectory. The BRIDGE has a double arch, with ornamental wall anchors in the masonry and a masonry bridge head on the south side; the built-up parapet dates from circa 1950 as a replacement for an iron parapet. The single-storey GATE with block-tooth string course beneath the eaves is covered by a gabled roof with slates and a roof dormer and has an arched passage with natural stone springers and slightly set-back double wooden doors in a natural stone frame; in both side walls of the passage there is a small framed round-arch doorway to the donjon (west) and the new building (east). Multi-light window. The gate is vaulted over by a stone barrel vault. Two heraldic stones, one with the date 1659 and one with the arms of Baron van Loë who was commandeur from 1691 to 1712; the stones probably refer to reconstructions/restoration. Next to it stands the DONJON on a rectangular ground plan which on three sides has its base in the moat; it is constructed of a basement and two storeys under a steeply pitched gabled roof with slates between stepped gables. At three corners corbelled turrets (arkels) and at the northeast corner a polygonal, below partially square projecting staircase tower, all under pointed spires. The facades are articulated by drip mouldings and sparnishes with Gothic natural stone tracery; the east facade has a polygonal built-out chimney. In the staircase tower an entrance doorway above which a pointed arch niche with the date 1763 and inscription S.G.I.G (Soe Goet is Got).
Valuation
FOREBURGH CONSISTING OF BRIDGE, GATE AND DONJON with "NEW BUILDING" and JESUIT BUILDING of general importance:
- because of its age;
- because of the donjon as a good example of secular Gothic architecture;
- because of the marking of the entrance to the foreburgh;
- because of its historical layering;
- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
