Omschrijving onderdeel 4
POORTGEBOUW. De toegang tot het kasteel wordt gevormd door een langgerekt poortgebouw uit 1607, gebouwd in opdracht van commandeur H. van Holtrop. Het gebouw staat aan de voorzijde met de voet in de gracht. Het op rechthoekige grondslag opgetrokken gebouw met centraal een torenvormige doorgang en uiterst links een vooruitspringende hoektoren (zuidwest) bestaat uit een souterrain met iets vooruitspringend metselwerk en één bouwlaag onder een met pannen (oorspronkelijk leien) gedekt dak. De gevels met een bloktandlijst net onder de goot zijn ingedeeld met vernieuwde kruisvensters onder ontlastingsbogen (voor 1941); de rechterzijgevel is een Vlaamse gevel. Steunberen. Restauratie in 1938 en na schade en brand in 1940. De poort en de hoektoren bestaan uit twee bouwlagen met natuurstenen hoekblokken, beide met een onder een daklijst omgaand natuurstenen hoofdgestel met consoles en rozetten. De poorttoren onder een met leien gedekte spits heeft een in natuursteen gevatte doorgang met inwendig een niet meer in gebruik zijnde ophaalconstructie: twee open sleuven aan weerszijden voor de sprieten die op de hamei rusten en met een tegenwicht verbonden zijn. Boven de doorgang in de voorgevel staat een zestiende-eeuws Mariabeeldje met de wapens van de Duitse Orde en van bouwheer Van Holtrop en op de verdieping een staand venster. De hoektoren onder een met leien gedekte ingesnoerde spits met helm (duiventil) heeft aan drie zijden een venster gevat in natuurstenen renaissanceomlijstingen (consoles waarop halve zuilen met Korintisch kapiteel die een kroonlijst dragen en een gebroken fronton). Ophaalbrug. Oorspronkelijk twee zijvleugels die aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw zijn afgebroken.

GATE BUILDING. Access to the castle is formed by an elongated gate building from 1607, built on the orders of Commandeur H. van Holtrop. The building stands on the front side with its base in the moat. The building erected on a rectangular ground plan with centrally a tower-shaped passage and at the far left a projecting corner tower (south-west) consists of a basement with slightly projecting brickwork and one storey beneath a roof covered with tiles (originally slate). The facades with a block-tooth cornice just below the eaves are articulated with renewed cross windows under relieving arches (before 1941); the right-hand side facade is a Flemish gable. Buttresses. Restoration in 1938 and following damage and fire in 1940. The gateway and the corner tower consist of two storeys with ashlar corner blocks, both with a main cornice running around beneath a roof edge in ashlar with consoles and rosettes. The gate tower beneath a spire covered with slate has a passage set in ashlar with internally a drawbridge mechanism no longer in use: two open slots on either side for the levers which rest on the hamei and are connected with a counterweight. Above the passage in the front facade stands a sixteenth-century statue of Mary with the coats of arms of the German Order and of builder Van Holtrop and on the storey above a standing window. The corner tower beneath a constricted spire covered with slate with a helm (dovecote) has on three sides a window set in ashlar Renaissance surrounds (consoles on which half columns with Corinthian capital carrying a cornice and a broken pediment). Drawbridge. Originally two side wings which were demolished at the end of the nineteenth century.
