Inleiding
Drie WATERPOMPEN uit 1846-1848, gebouwd in classicistische stijl, ontworpen door J.D. Zocher jr.
Door de gunstige ligging in het grondwaterrijke land aan de voet van de duinen kende Meerenberg een eigen watervoorziening met van oorsprong dertien à veertien pompen op het binnenterrein en in de tuinen rondom. Van deze pompen zijn er thans drie overgebleven. Ze bevinden zich op het voormalige binnenterrein van het ziekenhuis. Door middel van de pompen kon water uit welputten worden overgebracht in reservoirs voor de badinrichting. Een goede opslag en toevoer van water was van groot belang onder meer vanwege de badverpleging, Dit was namelijk een belangrijk onderdeel van de behandelingen in het gesticht.
Omschrijving
De waterpompen bestaan uit een vierhoekig basement, schacht en bekroning. Het hardstenen basement bezit aan één zijde een hardstenen vergaarbak. De tabs toe lopende schacht is met hout bekleed en voorzien van blokverdeling en een geprofileerde lijst bovenaan. Recht boven de vergaarbak bezit de schacht een gietijzeren spuwer, waarnaast een lange slinger met bol is opgenomen. Eén waterpomp is bovenop de schacht voorzien van een piramidale bekroning van hardsteen. De twee andere waterpompen zijn voorzien van een met asfaltpapier bekleed tentdak. Deze zijn vermoedelijk later aangebracht.
Waardering
De WATERPOMPEN zijn van algemeen belang vanwege:
- de cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een technische ontwikkeling; in casu de watervoorziening voor de verschillende badkamers in het ziekenhuiscomplex in het midden van de negentiende eeuw, waarbij gebruik werd gemaakt van water uit de duinen dat zich verzamelde in welputten;
- de architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van pompen in classicistische stijl, vanwege het materiaalgebruik, de toegepaste verhoudingen, de sobere vormgeving en de verzorgde detaillering. Daarnaast is het object in typologisch opzicht van belang als bijzondere vorm van pomp;
- de stedenbouwkundige en ensemblewaarden elk als onderdeel van een bij elkaar horende serie, als functioneel onderdeel van de watervoorziening en de hiermee verband houdende weloverwogen situering op het binnenterrein van het ziekenhuiscarré.

Due to the favourable location in the groundwater-rich land at the foot of the dunes, Meerenberg had its own water supply with originally thirteen to fourteen pumps on the inner courtyard and in the gardens around. Of these pumps, three now remain. They are located on the former inner courtyard of the hospital. By means of the pumps, water from well pits could be transferred to reservoirs for the bathing facility. Good storage and supply of water was of great importance, among other things because of bath nursing. This was an important part of the treatments in the institution.
Description
The water pumps consist of a rectangular base, shaft and crown. The hardstone base has a hardstone collecting basin on one side. The tapered shaft is clad with wood and provided with block division and a moulded list at the top. Directly above the collecting basin the shaft has a cast-iron spout, beside which a long lever with a ball is incorporated. One water pump is provided on top of the shaft with a pyramidal hardstone crown. The two other water pumps are provided with a tent roof covered with asphalt paper. These were presumably added later.

The WATER PUMPS are of general importance because of:
- the cultural-historical value as an example of a technical development; in this case the water supply for the various bathrooms in the hospital complex in the middle of the nineteenth century, using water from the dunes that collected in well pits;
- the architectural-historical value as an example of pumps in classical style, on account of the use of materials, the applied proportions, the sober design and the careful detailing. Furthermore, the object is of typological importance as a special form of pump;
- the urban planning and ensemble values each as part of a related series, as a functional component of the water supply and the carefully considered location associated with it on the inner courtyard of the hospital carré.
