Omschrijving onderdeel 2.

Description of component 2.

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Voorst.

Together with Het Loo, the park of De Voorst forms the prototype of the so-called French classicist garden architecture in the Netherlands. The eighteenth-century classicist layout of the grounds consisting of an axis of symmetry with the main building and two outbuildings enclosing a forecourt has been obscured by the conversion of the park into landscape style around 1820, but remains structurally recognizable. The eighteenth-century elements are now formed by the rectangular moat system around the house, the axis of symmetry (Voorsterallee) and cross lanes such as the Kapperallee and the cross lane running in a southerly direction, originally a sight line, which transitions into the main axis of the adjacent country estate 't Velde. To the east of the moat system lies a roundabout where the main axis and a cross axis intersect (currently the farmhouse Boombosch in the middle). In front of the house lies a large circular meadow with two landscaped oval ponds, the former fish ponds in the formal layout, which are now overgrown with vegetation. The meadow was laid out during the landscape period as was the curved drive along it. The forecourt, paved with brick, has, in contrast to the spacious layout in front of the house, an enclosed character, determined by the continuous building of the main building with colonnades, the outbuildings and the enclosure by means of fencing. The forecourt is further furnished with a simple parterre in the middle and a lamp (1899). At the rear, only the moat and the enclosing water feature remind of the formal layout. Through the conversion of the park into landscape style, the main axis behind the house has been obscured and now consists of a sight line across the lawn, which narrows toward the rear and subsequently widens with a view over a meadow. Around this axis a park wood with paths running in wide curves. The main lines of the formal axis have remained recognizable, the current relief supports this. Comparison of the Bonne maps from 1908 and 1929 shows that Leonard Springer, during his work on De Voorst between 1908 and 1912, further carried out the nineteenth-century landscaping of the formal garden at the rear of the house. Since then the pond feature centrally on the main axis at the rear has lost its rigid outline. On the north and south sides of the outbuildings lie rectangular, sunken grass parterres as the last remnant of Springer's neo-formal flower and rose garden (1908). The arrangement of the parterres is still present, consisting of five three-step sandstone steps flanked by rectangular plinths. The plinths are crowned with spherical sandstone ornaments and two busts (representing Roman figures). Outside the moat the country estate is characterized by a small-scale alternation of open (meadows and cultivated land) and closed spaces (wooded areas) with lanes, hedgerows, tree groups and solitary trees. The country estate character of the part of the park to the south and north of the house site and the forecourt was transformed by Springer into a park layout in landscape style, consisting of open spaces enclosed by park wood with winding paths, with a few solitary trees and tree groups. Furthermore, under Springer, the tree stock of the avenue trees of the Voorsterallee (main axis) and Kapperallee (cross axis) was (partially) renewed.

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Voorst of general interest:

- because of the cultural-historical value;

- because of the 18th-century structure of lanes and watercourses;

- because of the layout in landscape style from the 19th century;

- because of the layout in landscape style by Springer (1908-1912);

- because of its importance for the history of garden and landscape architecture;
