The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the strengthening of the Vallei position and is located on the section of the dike line in the municipality of Woudenberg between the Broekerweg and the border with the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It is one of a total of 21 casemates from this period that still remain on this section of the dike line.

Description:

Defensive work erected in 1939-1940, consisting of the remains of a cast-steel machine gun casemate of type G. The casemate was built as part of the strengthening of the Vallei position.

The cast-steel casemate, in short G, was the most common type of casemate in the Grebbelinie; this type of casemate was reasonably successful in the May days. Nicknames for the G-casemate were "Pillendozen" and "Bessemer Pears". The occupier studied the small G-casemates with great interest. During the May days they proved difficult to neutralise because of the small firing aperture and good camouflage possibilities. Most casemates faced east and had the handicap of a limited field of fire. They had little value because of this in any German positions during the war. The cast steel of the dome was salvaged from the concrete casing in 1941 for the benefit of the German war industry. This casemate is still the only remaining remnant of all 144 G-casemates in the Grebbelinie.

Valuation:

Cultural historical value through its memorial value because of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which was based on the outpost function during mobilisation and combat operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value because of the functional and spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this took shape in phases between 1744 and 1944.
