The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the strengthening of the Vallei line and is located in the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug on the section of the line dike between the Heuvelsesteeg and the Groeperkade. It is one of a total of 6 casemates from this period that still remain on this section of the line dike.

Description:

DEFENCE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type S3. The casemate was built as part of the strengthening of the Vallei line and is located on and partially in the line dike.

This is a light casemate of type S3 or Stekelvarken 3 named after the iron pegs on the outside to which camouflage material could be attached and the three loopholes. The casemate was intended for one light machine gun for purposes of frontal and flanking fire. The three loopholes together had a field of fire of 110 degrees. The two unused loopholes could if desired be closed with a 2cm steel shutter. There were no provisions for observation. The casemate has a rectangular plan with a straight front and rear side. The dimensions are: rear side 5.20 metres, side sides straight 1 metre, side sides sloped 2 metres and front side 2.50 metres. The height including floor plate is 3 metres. The casemate consists only of a fighting chamber with a rear exit, three rifle loopholes and has walls of 80 cm reinforced concrete. Bevels are made around the perimeter of the roof to effect the deflection of grenades.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical value through commemorative value due to its role during the fighting in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on the outpost function during mobilisation and warfare 1939-1940.

Ensemble value due to the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this was progressively developed in the period between 1744 and 1944.
