Omschrijving
Inleiding:

Description
Introduction:
The Grebbelinie is a water line of approximately 60 kilometres in length, which makes use of the wet conditions in the western, lowest-lying part of the Gelderse Vallei. It is a unique example of a water line constructed in the eighteenth century. Because no major interventions in the structure of the line have taken place since then, the greater part of the line embankment, the retaining embankments and the earthen defensive works have been preserved. This section of the line embankment is situated in the former municipality of Leersum.
Description:
An earthen DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1745 and 1746, consisting of an earthen embankment, constructed as a defensive embankment.
The section of the Line embankment in the former municipality of Leersum (now municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug) is approximately 800 metres long. It is situated between the border with the municipality of Woudenberg and the road "Groep". The Line embankment is not to profile, but the contours of the line embankment are clearly recognisable. North of the place where the railway line crosses the line embankment the line embankment is interrupted.
Valuation:
The work is of general interest because of:
Cultural-historical values as a component of the Grebbelinie, as this was constructed in six phases over a period of 200 years. Of great importance through its commemorative value due to its role during the fighting in 1939-1940.
Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on:
a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th century), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the outpost function during the mobilization and military operations 1939-1940
This is a complex which in its original form is an example of defensive works from the period:
phase 1: from 1744 onwards, construction of line embankment and works
Ensemble value due to its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as a component of the still well-preserved line embankment between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the centre of the municipality of Leusden. Also due to the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. Finally there is here a sound/reasonably sound relationship with the field of fire and inundation field.
The line embankment is rare because it is an almost completely extant example of an 18th century defensive work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defensive work.
