The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the strengthening of the Valleistelling and is located on the Asschatterkade. It is one of a total of 9 casemates from this period that still remain on this curtain wall and the voorwerk located on the wall.

Description:

DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type S7. The casemate was built as part of the strengthening of the Valleistelling and is located in the middle of a bend in the Asschatterkade.

This is a light casemate of type S7, also called Zevenklapper (seven-shot) on account of the seven firing ports. This type is fairly rare. The casemate was designed for one light machine gun and has a field of fire of 310 degrees. The casemate has a hexagonal stepped floor plan with two entrances at the rear and seven firing ports in the front and the bevelled left and right sides and the side sides. The interior space is divided into 3 compartments by half retaining walls to localise the effect of hits. The casemate has walls of 80 cm reinforced concrete. The height of the casemate is 3 metres including base slab. The maximum dimensions are 5.2 by 8.2 metres. Bevels have been made around the perimeter of the roof to effect the deflection of grenades.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical value through its commemorative value because of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based on the outpost function during the mobilisation and combat operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value because of the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this took shape in phases in the period between 1744 and 1944.
