Omschrijving
Inleiding:

Description
Introduction:
The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the fortification of the Vallei position and is situated on the Asschatterkade. It is one of a total of 9 casemates from this period that still remain on this keerkade and the forward work situated on the kade.
Description:
A DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type S3. The casemate was built as part of the fortification of the Vallei position and is located against and within the south side of the kade.
This is a light casemate of type S3 or called Stekelvarken 3 because of the iron pins on the outside to which camouflage material could be attached and the three embrasures. The casemate was intended for one light machine gun for frontal and flanking fire. The three embrasures together had a field of fire of 110 degrees. The two unused embrasures could if desired be closed with a shutter of 2 cm steel. There were no provisions for observation. The casemate has a rectangular ground plan with a straight front and rear side. The dimensions are: rear side 5.20 metre, side sides straight 1 metre, side sides angled 2 metre and front side 2.50 metre. The height including floor slab is 3 metre. The casemate consists solely of a combat room with a rear exit, three rifle embrasures and has walls of 80 cm reinforced concrete. Bevels have been made around the perimeter of the roof to effect the deflection of grenades.
Valuation:
The casemate is of general importance because of:
Cultural-historical value due to its commemorative significance because of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.
Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which is based on the forward post function during mobilisation and military operations 1939-1940.
Ensemble value because of the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this took shape in phases during the period between 1744 and 1944.
