The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The Grebbelinie is a water line approximately 60 kilometers in length, which makes use of the wet conditions in the western, lowest-lying part of the Gelders Valley. It is a unique example of a water line development from the eighteenth century. Because no major interventions have taken place in the structure of the line since then, the largest part of the line embankment, the check dams and the earthen defensive works have been preserved. This section of the line dyke is located in the municipality of Leusden between the Driftakkerweg and the southern municipal boundary. The line is interrupted in a few places.

Description:

In 1745 and 1746 constructed earthen DEFENSIVE WORKS, consisting of an earthen embankment, constructed as a defensive embankment.

The section of the line dyke in the municipality of Leusden is approximately 8000 meters long. It is located between the Driftakkerweg and the boundary with the municipality of Woudenberg. The line dyke is not under profile, but the contours of the line dyke are clearly recognizable. As a result of the construction of the industrial estate De Horst and the adjacent residential area, the part of the line dyke between the Mosselpad and the Vlietsingel has disappeared. On this section of the line dyke there are three boundary markers with the inscriptions O33, O46 and O49

Valuation:

The construction is of general importance because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as this was constructed in six phases over a period of 200 years. Of great importance because of its commemorative value due to its role during combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building craft, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th century), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the outpost function during mobilization and wartime operations 1939-1940

This concerns a complex which is in its original construction an example of defensive works from the period:

phase 1: from 1744, construction of line dyke and works

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as part of the well-preserved line dyke between the Werk aan de Roode Haan and the core of the municipality of Leusden. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. Finally, there is a good/reasonably good relationship with the field of fire and inundation field

The line dyke is rare because it is an almost completely surviving example of an 18th-century defensive work in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of defensive works.
