The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The casemate was built in 1939-1940 as part of the reinforcement of the Vallei Position and is located in the front of the main rampart of the Werk aan de Glashut. It is one of a total of three casemates from this period that still remain on this work.

Description:

A DEFENSIVE WORK constructed in 1939-1940, consisting of a concrete machine-gun casemate of type B. The casemate was built as part of the reinforcement of the Vallei Position.

This is a flanking concrete casemate. The casemate was armed with a heavy machine gun and was intended for flanking fire. The enemy side is covered by 1.20 m of reinforced concrete, while the roof is 1 metre thick and the rear side 80 cm. The firing port with a field of fire of 40 degrees is covered by a concrete projection, so that the opening was difficult for the enemy to observe. The door was fitted with a rifle firing port. The casemate has a rectangular floor plan with dimensions of 4.5 by 3.45 metres, excluding a protruding foundation edge of 0.2 metres. The height of the casemate is 3.30 metres including floor slab. Bevels have been made around the perimeter of the roof to effect the deflection of grenades.

Valuation:

The casemate is of general interest on account of:

Cultural-historical value through its commemorative value on account of its role during the combat operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical value in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which was based on the outpost function during the mobilization and war operations 1939-1940.

Ensemble value on account of the functional-spatial relationship to the other components of the Grebbelinie, as this developed in phases during the period between 1744 and 1944.
