The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

The Coelhorsterkade is one of the most northerly lock gates of the Grebbelinie and lies to the west of Amersfoort between the Coelhorsterweg and the Grebbeliniedijk. The gate served as the lock gate between the 9th or Coelhorsterkom and the 10th or Vuijdijkkom. The gate is approximately 750 metres in length.

Description:

Earth FORTIFICATION constructed in 1785, consisting of an earth rampart, constructed as a defensive wall.

The Coelhorsterkade is an example of a waterline and defensive wall. The dike served as a supporting gate for inundations and as a defensive wall. On the gate there is still a tank obstacle from the mobilisation of 1939-1940.

Valuation:

The construction is of general significance because of:

Cultural-historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as it was constructed in six phases over a period of 200 years. Of great significance because of the commemorative value due to its role during the military operations in 1939-1940.

Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic engineering, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th century), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the outpost function during mobilisation and military operations 1939 - 1940

This is a complex that in its initial construction is an example of fortifications from the period:

phase 2: 1785 -'86, reinforcement

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as a lock gate in the still intact line dike between the Jachthaven at the Eem and Werk bij Krachtwijk. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex.

Finally, there is an intact/reasonably intact relation with the field of fire and inundation area.

The Coelhorsterkade is rare because it is a still virtually complete surviving example of an 18th-century fortification in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of fortification.

The gate is well preserved because virtually all the components belonging to it are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
