Omschrijving complexonderdeel 27
De twee MARIAGROTTEN uit 1890-1900 in de kloostertuin zijn kunstmatig aangelegde grotten bestaande uit onder meer aarde, cement en sintels. Eén ingang is ten westen van het beeld van de Heilige Aloysius. Het inwendige van de grot wordt door middel van gekleurde glaspanelen van bovenaf belicht, hetgeen een bijzonder dramatisch effect sorteert (in de kleuren blauw, geel, groen, oranje). De grot bevat een hellend en dalend stelsel van smalle gangen en passages, slingerend, de vloer is van beton. Er zijn zes afzonderlijke nissen voorzien van reliëfs met voorstellingen uit het leven van Maria als Moeder van Smarten. Voor elk reliëf is een houten kniel-en bidplank in de rotswand aangebracht. De zes reliëfvoorstellingen geven in wit ceramiek de volgende voorstellingen met bijbelteksten weer:
a. Opdracht van Jezus in de Tempel. "Simeon sprach zu Maria: Deine eigene Seele wird ein Schwert durchdringen Luk."
b. Vlucht naar Egypte. "Sieh da erschien ein Engel des Herrn dem Josef und sprach: 'Nimm das Kind und Seine Mutter und fliehe nach Ägypten'".
c. Jezus onderricht als twaalfjarige de schriftgeleerden in de Tempel. "Siehe Dein Vater und ich haben Dich mit Schmerzen gesucht" Luk. 2.48.
d. Jezus valt op weg naar Gogoltha in aanwezigheid van Maria, Johannes en Simon van Cyrene. "Mit wem soll ich dich vergleichen Jungfrau, Tochter Sion? Denn gross wie das Meer ist dein Schmerz Klag. 2, 18".
e. De gekruisigde Jezus in aanwezigheid van Maria, Johannes en Maria Magdalena. "Seht die Mutter voller Schmerzen. Wie Sie mit zerrissenem Herzen an dem Kreuz des Sohnes steht".
f. Graflegging van Jezus. "Meine Augen vergehen von Tränen, Und mein Herz ist voller Betrübnis!"
In deze grot staat tegen een wand een altaar met daarboven een wit geglazuurd beeld van Moeder met Kind, een Pietà. Tegen de achterwand is een veelkleurig mozaïek met schilderingen van engelen aangebracht. Een metalen spijlenhek staat voor de Pietà.
Een tweede grot in dezelfde kunstmatige heuvel heeft een ingang die is gedecoreerd met teksten en mozaïek, de teksten vormen strofen uit de hymne Ave Maris Stella ("AVE MARIS STELLA, DEI MATER ALMA, ATQUE SEMPER VIRGO, FELIX COELI PORTA"). Deze tekst staat boven de ingang in een boogveld, is uitgevoerd in mozaïek op een wit fond, letters in bruin, rood, blauw, oranje; het kader in bruin, geel, rood. De ingang ligt pal tegenover de kloostertuinmuur langs de Parkstraat, heeft de vorm van de letter Y en is deels uitgevoerd met traptreden. Deze tweede Mariagrot heeft het karakter van een kleine ondergrondse gebedsruimte en is tweedelig. Het eerste gedeelte bestaat uit een smalle gang ter lengte van vier traveeën, is voorzien van een wandgeleding met halfzuiltjes en pilasters en wordt overkluisd met een tonggewelf; de vloer van de gang is belegd met lichtgele tegeltjes. De rechthoekige gebedsruimte is iets breder dan de gang, wordt halfrond gesloten, telt drie traveeën en heeft een gewelf in de vorm van een spitsboog. De vloer is belegd met tegels in de kleuren blauw, rood, wit en zwart en uitgevoerd met geometrische motieven. In de sluiting staat een beeld van Maria met Kind opgesteld; Maria is staand op een sokkel weergegeven en wordt voorafgegaan door een archivolt waarop vele eretitels zijn geschreven. Hiervoor is een houten kniel-/bidbank geplaatst. De wand achter het beeld van Maria met Kind vertoont o.a. een amandelmotief, stralenkrans en eretitels alsook een voorstelling van de H. Geest in de figuur van een duif. Maria wordt geflankeerd door twee maal twee engelen met tekstbanderoles. Belichting vindt van bovenaf plaats, door middel van kleurige glaspanelen (groen, rood). De wanden en het gewelf van de gebedsruimte zijn volledig bedekt met kleurrijk mozaïek waarbij de wanden ook nog spitsboogvormige plaquettes bevatten met Latijnse teksten ter ere van Maria.

De Mariagrotten uit 1890-1900 in de kloostertuin vertegenwoordigen algemeen belang wegens:

The two MARIAN GROTTOS from 1890-1900 in the cloister garden are artificially constructed grottos consisting of among other things earth, cement and clinker. One entrance is to the west of the statue of Saint Aloysius. The interior of the grotto is lit from above by means of coloured glass panels, which creates a particularly dramatic effect (in the colours blue, yellow, green, orange). The grotto contains a sloping and descending system of narrow passages and corridors, winding, with a concrete floor. There are six separate niches provided with reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Mary as Mother of Sorrows. For each relief a wooden kneeling and prayer bench has been installed in the rock wall. The six relief depictions show in white ceramic the following scenes with biblical texts:
a. Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. "Simeon said to Mary: A sword will pierce your own soul too Luke."
b. Flight to Egypt. "Behold an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and said: 'Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt'".
c. Jesus teaches as a twelve-year-old boy among the teachers in the Temple. "Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you Luke. 2.48.".
d. Jesus falls on the way to Golgotha in the presence of Mary, John and Simon of Cyrene. "To whom shall I compare you, O Virgin, Daughter of Zion? For your anguish is as vast as the sea Lam. 2, 18".
e. The crucified Jesus in the presence of Mary, John and Mary Magdalene. "Behold the Mother full of sorrows. How she stands with a torn heart at the cross of her son".

In this grotto stands against a wall an altar with above it a white glazed statue of Mother with Child, a Pietà. Against the back wall is a multicoloured mosaic with paintings of angels. A metal railed screen stands in front of the Pietà.
A second grotto in the same artificial hill has an entrance that is decorated with texts and mosaic, the texts form stanzas from the hymn Ave Maris Stella ("AVE MARIS STELLA, DEI MATER ALMA, ATQUE SEMPER VIRGO, FELIX COELI PORTA"). This text stands above the entrance in an arched field, executed in mosaic on a white ground, letters in brown, red, blue, orange; the frame in brown, yellow, red. The entrance lies directly opposite the cloister garden wall along the Parkstraat, has the shape of the letter Y and is partly executed with steps. This second Marian grotto has the character of a small underground prayer room and is divided into two parts. The first part consists of a narrow corridor with a length of four bays, is provided with a wall ledge with half-columns and pilasters and is vaulted with a barrel vault; the floor of the corridor is laid with light yellow tiles. The rectangular prayer room is slightly wider than the corridor, is closed in a semicircle, comprises three bays and has a vault in the form of a pointed arch. The floor is laid with tiles in the colours blue, red, white and black and executed with geometric motifs. In the closing stands a statue of Mary with Child; Mary is depicted standing on a plinth and is preceded by an archivolt on which many honorific titles are written. In front of this a wooden kneeling/prayer bench has been placed. The wall behind the statue of Mary with Child shows among other things an almond motif, rays of light and honorific titles as well as a representation of the Holy Spirit in the figure of a dove. Mary is flanked by two pairs of angels with text scrolls. Lighting takes place from above, by means of coloured glass panels (green, red). The walls and vault of the prayer room are completely covered with colourful mosaic whereby the walls also contain pointed arch-shaped plaques with Latin texts in honour of Mary.
