Omschrijving complexonderdeel 2

Description
Description complex component 2
St. Michaël (CHURCH of the Steyler Missionsgesellschaft des Göttlichen Wortes). 1880-1884 by H. Erlemann after sketches by the architect and priest Jos. Prill of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Neo-Gothic basilica, consisting of a lower and an upper church, the latter with galleries, both with ambulatory and radiating chapels. West facade with two towers, crowned by octagons with spires. Between the towers a loggia with arched opening on columns. The lower church has heavy pillars, the upper church columns with gold-painted acanthus capitals. Stone cross-ribbed vaults. In the upper church a richly detailed neo-Gothic winged altarpiece. The radiating chapels possess neo-Gothic stained glass. The Church of Saint Michael is entered in the register of protected monuments.
The CLOISTER BUILDINGS of the monastery Sint Michaël form a building complex on an approximately M-shaped ground plan. The neo-Gothic basilica with two tower spires is centrally situated. Around it lie various other building volumes including residential wings. The front facade on the St. Michaëlstraat has a somewhat symmetrical layout. In the central section a building element with modernised entrance area. On both sides residential wings. The front facade is terminated on both sides with a tower-like building volume. The centrally located entrance building was constructed around 1884 and has a symmetrically arranged front facade and comprises three storeys plus roof level. The gabled roof with roof dormer is partly covered with tiles, partly with slate. The central section of the front facade terminates in a stepped gable. The entrance area was modernised around 1980. Segmental arch-shaped and pointed arch-shaped windows. In the stepped gable three pointed arch-shaped spandrels with in the smaller spandrels left and right a pointed arch-shaped window. The spandrels are separated by two stone pilasters. In the roof dormer four roof dormers with a gabled roof that is covered with slate. On the stepped gable a stone cross. Arch friezes below the eaves and in the stepped gable. Adjacent to the left and right sides of the entrance building stand two virtually identical building elements. The building on the right side dates from 1876 and the building on the left side from 1884. The building on the right side has in each of the three storeys six windows. The building on the left side five windows per storey. In the roof dormer on the right six windows and on the left five. The next building element to the right of the entrance building dates from 1878 and shows similarity with the entrance building. The central section of the front facade terminates in a stepped gable with in it two small windows and two stone pilasters. The windows are segmental arch-shaped and pointed arch-shaped. The next building element on the right side dates from around 1879 and has again a similar structure to the volumes flanking the entrance building. The front facade is terminated on the north side with a tower-like structure from 1911. This building comprises four storeys and is covered with a flat roof with crenellated columns on the roof edge. Below the eaves arch friezes have been applied. On the south side the front facade is terminated with a similar tower structure as on the north side. This building element dates from 1912 and comprises five storeys under a flat roof. Similarly, crenellated brick columns stand here on the roof edge. Below the eaves arch friezes have been applied. On the north side of the building complex, partly at right angles to the rear facade of the corner tower, stands a residential wing from around 1880. This wing was enlarged somewhat on the Meuse side in 1910. This building volume comprises three storeys plus basement and roof level. The broken hipped roof is covered with tiles. The roof dormers are executed with a gabled roof. The segmental arch-shaped windows are provided with glazing bars. Approximately in the middle of the front facade a volume projects slightly forward; it terminates in a stepped gable. In the stepped gable is situated a pointed arch-shaped window. The entrance area in this facade section with stepped gable was modernised around 1980. The gable end on the Meuse side of this residential wing has a central section that terminates in a stepped gable and is accentuated with pilaster strips. In the first storey of this facade section a rectangular wooden door with steps of natural stone. The roof volume is provided on both the Meuse side and the courtyard side with a series of roof dormers. The next building element on the Meuse side dates from 1888 and originally had two storeys plus basement, but was raised by one storey around 1910 and has a flat roof. The next building volume forms the connection with the St. Michaël Church. In this volume are housed among other things the staircase of the church and the sacristy. On the left side a tower volume with three storeys of unequal height under a tent roof with slate. The pointed arch-shaped windows have stone lintels, below the eaves arch friezes have been applied. Between the second and third storey a stone drip moulding has been placed. To the right of the tower volume is situated the entrance to the staircase in a high pointed arch-shaped surround (from around 1980). At the top of the pointed arch the facade consists of three small pointed arch-shaped leaded-glass windows with for the central window a corbel on which stands an image of St. Andreas. On the south side of the St. Michaël Church, on the side of the apse, stands a building volume in three storeys with flat roof. This volume dates from around 1886 and forms the connection with the large residential wing on the south side of the cloister complex. This wing stands partly at right angles to the rear facade of the tower structure on the south side of the front facade of the St. Michaël Cloister and comprises three storeys plus a basement and a roof level. The broken hipped roof is covered with tiles. On the north and south sides a series of roof dormers have been placed. The gable end on the Meuse side is provided with a tower-like extension. This extension comprises six storeys and is octagonal. On the flat roof the roof edge has been executed with brick crenellations. Pointed arch-shaped windows. In the highest storey there is situated in each facade side a round window and below the eaves arch friezes have been applied. The front facade of the long residential wing on the south side comprises three storeys plus a basement and a roof level. The central facade section terminates in a stepped gable with in it three pointed arch-shaped windows. This facade section was provided around 1980 with a new entrance area with broad stairs. The tower volume forms the termination of this residential wing. The tower volume is provided on the west and south sides with an entrance portal in a storey with flat roof. The portal building on the north side of the St. Michaël Church is provided on the courtyard side with two heavy buttresses with between them a rectangular wooden door with pointed arch-shaped fanlight. At the top of this door a large round leaded-glass window. To the right of the door a high pointed arch-shaped leaded-glass window. The rear facades of the remaining building elements have modern window frames. In the interior of the cloister complex the following elements are of importance among others. The structure of the residential buildings with halls, staircases and corridors is intact. The finishing of the interior has been partly modernised except for the large portal on the north side of the St. Michaël Church with cross-ribbed vaults and pilasters and some authentic staircases with stairs with wrought-iron railing and wooden handrail. In the sacristy of the St. Michaël Church stand authentic vestment cabinets with carved panels. In the former hall around a row of square columns in natural stone; these columns are executed with chamfered corners and carry large pointed arches.
Valuation complex component 2
The church dedicated to Saint Michael and the cloister buildings of the monastery Sint Michaël are of general importance and possess remarkable cultural and architectural-historical values. Cultural-historical values are particularly embodied in the church history for it concerns a so-called Kulturkampf cloister with location near the German imperial border. The architectural-historical values are determined by the applied building style and associated detailing while the complex as an example from the oeuvre of the architects Erlemann and Prill provides an important achievement. The cloister buildings with cloister church are rare in a typological respect, in particular by the manner in which the cloister churches are incorporated in a larger building volume and stand in a functional, historical and decorative relation to the garden layout. The interiors of the upper and lower churches of the cloister are particularly valuable from both an art-historical and a religious-historical perspective. Ensemble values are derived from the location near the Meuse and due to the spatial and historical connections with the other monastic foundations of Arnold Janssen in Steyl.
