Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
From 1863 onwards, Amersfoort developed as a railway town. Various railway enterprises existing at that time laid railway lines here with associated service buildings. Originally the Wagenbedrijf Amersfoort (WBA) was a 'wagonmaker's workshop' of the then Hollandse IJzeren Spoorwegmaatschappij (HIJSM) which took this site into use as such in 1904. The railway company later became part of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) which further developed and organized the site for maintenance, overhaul and conversion of freight wagons. After 1996 came the independence of the company into NS subsidiary Nedtrain. In 2000 it was closed again. The site is located between Amersfoort Station on the south side and the Soesterkwartier on the north side. It is approximately 1.5 km long and 300 m wide. The buildings are centrally located on the site from the Soesterkwartier side where the original entrance with porter's lodge is also located. Furthermore, a number of buildings with other functions are present on the site, such as a warehouse, a timber shed and a bicycle store, as well as numerous railway installations such as bundles of sidings, switches and buffer stops. The boiler house was built in 1904 with an extension from 1917. The chimney that originally belonged to the boiler house has been demolished.
Description
The BOILER HOUSE (complex component 3) is located north of the main building and forms part of the industrial street there. It is a single-storey building with a gabled roof covered with tiles between stepped gables. Over the ridge of the building is constructed a ventilation stack with wooden shutters. Windows and doors are irregularly placed in the facades. Some of these still consist of original cast-iron windows and some have been renewed. Internally the building is divided into a battery charging room and a boiler house.
Valuation
The BOILER HOUSE is of general importance, owing to:
- the (cultural) historical value as an expression of the history and development of railway construction in the Netherlands; - the architectural historical value as a characteristic example of industrial architecture - the ensemble value in relation to the other buildings.
