The register's description

Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

From 1863 onwards, Amersfoort developed as a railway town. Various railway enterprises that existed at that time laid railway lines here with associated service buildings. Originally the Wagenbedrijf Amersfoort (WBA) was a 'wagon workshop' of the then Hollandse IJzeren Spoorwegmaatschappij (HIJSM) which took this site into use as such in 1904. This railway company later became part of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) which further arranged and developed the site for the maintenance, overhaul and conversion of freight wagons. Many of the workers were housed in the adjacent district, the Soesterkwartier. After 1996 came the independence of the company as NS subsidiary Nedtrain. In 2000, however, it was closed again. The site is located between Amersfoort Station on the south side and the Soesterkwartier on the north side. It is approximately 1.5 km long and 300 m wide. The buildings are situated centrally on the site on the Soesterkwartier side where the original entrance with porter's lodge is also located. Furthermore, a number of buildings with other functions are present on the site such as a warehouse, a shed for finished wood and a bicycle store, as well as numerous railway facilities such as bundles of holding tracks, points and buffers. The spring factory or smithy was built in 1908 and extended in 1924.

Description

The SPRING FACTORY (complex component 2) is located north of the main building. The oldest part is the narrower eastern part from 1908, the wider western part dates from 1924. Both parts have a rectangular plan and consist of one storey with roof truss. The building is constructed of brick. Both side facades are articulated by projecting chimneys. Between these, the south facade has one arched window each with cast-iron frames. On the north side, the facade between the chimneys is built up to the gutter line and recessed into the roof. Large rectangular windows with cast-iron frames are set in this. The east and west facades are executed as stepped gables with an arched carriage entrance in the middle and an arched window above it, as well as an arched window to the left and right. The west facade also has two buttress-like masonry projections on either side of the door. All windows are provided with a pivoting element. The gabled roof is covered with crossed pantiles and has a half-hipped roof on the east side. On the ridge of the roof stand wooden ventilation shutters with matching louvres. In the interior, the roof truss structure is evident. This consists of iron collar-tied roof trusses resting on columns which stand against the side walls. The trusses are so-called knee braces, executed in UNP and angle iron connected with rivets.

Valuation

The SPRING FACTORY/SMITHY is of general importance on account of - the (cultural) historical value as an expression of the history and development of railway construction in the Netherlands; - of architectural historical value as a characteristic industrial building; - the ensemble value on account of the functional spatial coherence with the other components.
