Description
Description component 2
THE HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of Diepenheim consists of a number of characteristic components, namely the castle belt with the seven-sided double moat and the Rode Allée from the 17th century; the lane system to the west and north of the house from the 18th century and the curved approach drive, the landscape park with ponds and paths to the northeast of the house and the garden layout to the left (to the south) of the house from the early 20th century. The garden and park layout contains the following elements of historical significance: - the forecourt with circular lawns from the early 20th century with in the middle a concrete garden vase on a plinth (see for this component 10) - the espalier fruit trees against the gables of both outbuildings and the side wings of the house - the formal garden to the south of the house with a pattern of box hedges from the early 20th century with in the middle a plinth with sundial (see for this component 10), closed off on the west side by a masonry garden wall (see for this component 12) - the kitchen garden with glasshouse and cold frames (see for this component 11) behind the left outbuilding from the early 20th century - the former castle belt (now pasture) behind the house, bounded by hornbeam, within the moat with sight lines through the hedge to the surrounding countryside. Sundial in the middle (see for this component 10) - the double 17th-century moat with fruit tree planting on the intermediate strip - the two 'bastions' on the southwest and northwest side of the moat - the curved approach drive from the early 19th century (1827?) with tree-lined avenue and access gate (see for this component 6) the former Bongert to the southeast of the moated homestead, since the middle of the 19th century a pasture with tree groups, which provides a Star Wood: predominantly deciduous timber (oaks) Path along curved elongated water feature Rhododendrons - visual connection from the house onto the Kooijdijk (Lochemseweg) and vice versa - the park and park wood to the northeast of the homestead from the early 19th century with curved pond, winding paths and silted-up small pond and likewise appendix-shaped water feature on the Regge side - the Rode Allée with tree-lined avenue (predominantly pedunculate oak) with access gate at the end (see for this component 8) as part of the oldest layout around the house - the park pastures and the sight axis to the west of the heptagon - the lane on the north side of the heptagon in westerly direction as far as the bridge (Vlierdijk) - pasture and adjoining park wood to the north of the homestead with timber lodge (see for this component 13) - lane to the north of the aforementioned pasture as far as the Leidebeek in the west - the over-garden to the south of the Lochemseweg with former chauffeur's residence (see for this component 14)
Valuation
The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historical country estate Diepenheim is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical significance:
- by reason of the presence of 17th- and 18th-century formal elements in the layout
- by reason of the early 19th-century landscape park replacing an 18th-century Star Wood on the northeast side of the homestead
- by reason of the presence of a number of sight lines from the house onto the surrounding landscape
- as an expression of a development in the history of garden architecture from the 17th to the 20th century, in which both formal and landscape elements are recognisable side by side
- by reason of the characteristic lane, path and pond pattern
- by reason of the distinctive structure of the moat with 'bastions' as a reference to a military fortification
- by reason of the visual-spatial context in which the buildings have been deliberately positioned.
