Inleiding
Op de hoek van Nicolaas Witsenkade en Pieter Pauwstraat in 1889-90 tot stand gekomen HERENHUIS voor één gezin naar een ontwerp in Neo-Venetiaanse stijl van Ed. Cuypers in opdracht van D. Sanders.
Omschrijving
Op een nagenoeg rechthoekige plattegrond tot stand gekomen herenhuis bestaande uit drie bouwlagen onder een ver overstekend plat dak. Overstek gedragen door uit hout gesneden sierconsoles. Grote gesloten gevelvlakken uitgevoerd in gele baksteen op een hardstenen plint. Op de begane grond worden gebosseerde gevelvlakken slechts onderbroken door de flauw risalerende hoofdentree aan Nicolaas Witsenkade en naast elkaar geplaatste rondboogvormige vensteropeningen aan beide gevelzijden. De hoek van de begane grondverdieping is afgeschuind. De bel-etage met drie kamers-en-suite heeft aan beide gevels een erker op zware bewerkte consoles: aan de zijde van de Pieter Pauwstraat in het midden van een verder gesloten gevelvlak met een versiering van witgepleisterde blokjes; aan de zijde van de Nicolaas Witsenkade boven de entree met daarnaast (r) een rechtafgesloten venster met twee stijlen. De tweede verdieping is voorzien van gekoppelde rondboogvensters en verdiepte vlakken en heeft een beschildering van sjabloonornamenten in goud op een pastel-groene ondergrond. De verdiepingen worden gescheiden door witgepleisterde banden. Alle vensters zijn voorzien van glas-in-lood bovenlichten.
Aan de tuinzijde bevindt zich een serre met glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten. Het bovenliggend balkon heeft een deels uit hout en decoratief smeedijzere opgetrokken borstwering. De tuin wordt aan de straatzijde afgesloten door een eveneens uit gele baksteen opgetrokken muur met gepleisterde en geprofileerde waterlijst ter hoogte van de begane grondverdieping. Links in deze muur bevindt zich een rondboogvormige ingang naar de tuin.
Waardering
Herenhuis van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als een gaaf gebleven voorbeeld van een laat 19de-eeuws woonhuis in een in Nederland zeldzaam toegepaste Neo-Venetiaanse stijl alsmede van belang in het oeuvre van Ed. Cuypers. Voorst van situationele waarde.

Description
A town house built on an almost rectangular floor plan consisting of three storeys under a far-projecting flat roof. The overhang is supported by decorative consoles cut from wood. Large closed facade surfaces executed in yellow brick on a hardstone plinth. On the ground floor bossed facade surfaces are interrupted only by the slightly projecting main entrance on Nicolaas Witsenkade and round-arch window openings placed side by side on both facade sides. The corner of the ground floor storey is chamfered. The bel-étage with three rooms-in-suite has an oriel window on both facades on heavy worked consoles: on the Pieter Pauwstraat side in the middle of an otherwise closed facade surface with a decoration of whitewashed blocks; on the Nicolaas Witsenkade side above the entrance with next to it (r) a squared-off window with two mullions. The second storey is provided with coupled round-arch windows and recessed surfaces and has a painting of stencilled ornaments in gold on a pastel-green ground. The storeys are separated by whitewashed bands. All windows are provided with decorative leadlight fanlights.
On the garden side is a conservatory with decorative leadlight in the fanlights. The balcony above has a balustrade partly built of wood and decorative wrought iron. The garden is closed off on the street side by a wall also built of yellow brick with a plastered and profiled drip moulding at the level of the ground floor storey. On the left in this wall is a round-arch entrance to the garden.
