Omschrijving onderdeel 2

Description
Description component 2
HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT. Park whose character is determined by a landscape design from the mid-19th century with the castle as its focal point and with paths and planted lawns or park meadows bordered by planting on the northeast and southwest sides thereof. In creating the layout use was made of already existing avenues and open and enclosed elements such as arable land and woodlands. From an earlier phase several elements are still preserved, such as an elongated tapering grass field with accompanying watercourses on both sides south of the farmhouse, an avenue planted with sweet chestnuts on the east side of the farmhouse, an avenue planted with oaks on the west side of the complex and the round islet (former pleasure garden and bleaching field) in the Leigraaf.
The park contains the following elements of historical importance, the enumeration of which begins in the northeast. - The approach drive dating from the same period as the castle, partly planted with oaks (Quercus robur), which continues into Posterholt. The summer oaks from Burgemeester Geradsstraat to the red gatework at the entrance are the oldest, probably dating from the time of the construction of the house (around 1850). At the level of the northeastern lawn the avenue joins the walking path that runs around it and the planting changes from an avenue planting to a planting with specimens. Just before the castle the path splits. The southern branch runs along the front continuing around the lawn. The northern branch continues its course along the curve of the southwestern lawn towards the farmhouse. The following historical plant assortment along the avenue is observable: two groups of common beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea') on either side of the entrance at the red gatework, a Lawson's cypress (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) from around 1900 in the bend of the split towards the walking path; along the walking path a bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) (probably still 18th-century), in the bend of the avenue towards the house a Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera) from around 1900; a bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) on the east side of the house and a Dutch lime which flanks the house on the west side. The two paths accompanied and along the edges planted with specimen trees and tree groups, lawns or park meadows on the northeast and southwest sides of the castle. Between the tree groups radial sight lines have been created far beyond the layout, onto the agricultural landscape, towards the Vlootbeekdal, the approach drive towards Posterholt, onto the orangery and over the pond. The southwestern lawn slopes down towards the pond whereby the spatial effect from the castle towards the pond is strengthened and the prominent position of the castle from the pond is emphasized. The following historical plant assortment is observable: in the northeastern parkland: a sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Leopoldii') from around 1900 along the walking path; a Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Felifera') from around 1900. Both mark the view from the house towards the approach drive. Remnant of a clump with among others a common beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea') dating from the time of the construction of the house and which marks the central sight axis. Southwestern parkland: on the east side a wooded planting with among other things an old beech (Fagus sylvatica) on a hill and a row planting of Robinias (false acacias). On the south side thereof, bordering the lawn, a large group with Rhododendrons. On the west side of the parkland near the castle farmstead a common beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'), flanked by Robinias. - The path pattern in the form of a figure eight around both lawns. The castle is the focal point of this pattern. - The winding path on the north side between both curves of the figure eight. Here lies the stone table on a circular hill (see component 4 for this) which is surrounded by five maples (Acer pseudoplatanus). The following historical plant assortment is observable: Along the walking path at the east border of the grounds there is a side planting of seven sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa) which probably date from the time of the construction of the house (around 1850). - From this path a winding path branches off towards the former kitchen garden. On the border between park and kitchen garden stands an Eastern white pine which because of its estimated age (1810-1820) was already there at the time of the formal layout. - The grounds of the former kitchen garden to the northwest of the figure-eight shaped avenue pattern which is closed off by a garden wall with orangery (see component 5 for this). - The swan-shaped pond with islet. On the bank on the southeast side of the pond stand two medlars (Mespilus germanica), flanked by a group of Rhododendron. - The triangular plot lying here to the west with an open meadow and an enclosed wooded plot as demarcation of one of the sight lines. - The 18th-century avenue planted with oaks (Quercus robur), called the Dark Gallery, on the west side which passes through the aforementioned plot to the farmhouse and which before 1850 formed one of the two access roads to the Aerwinkel. The following historical plant assortment is furthermore still observable: two sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa) from around 1850 which mark the original access to the farmhouse. - The tapered grounds south of the farmhouse, surrounded by watercourses, which already existed in that form in the 18th century. The pattern of the transverse avenues and the round basin are still recognizable in the grounds. - The walking wood, called The Maze on the southeast and east side of the grounds which slopes down in the direction of the round plot on the Leigraaf and is intersected by winding paths. The walking wood extends in a westerly direction. On the south side it is bordered by the Vlootbeek, on the north side by the Leigraaf. In the wood a round hill which was once planted all around with beeches (Fagus sylvatica). Now two beeches remain. - The round plot on the Leigraaf which was used in the early 19th century as a pleasure garden and later as a bleaching field. - The 18th-century avenue planted with sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa) on the east side of the farmhouse, which before 1850 formed one of the two access roads to the Aerwinkel.
Valuation
The HISTORIC PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Aerwinkel is of general importance:
- as a good example of a landscape design in relation to the main building created in 1854-1856
- because of the presence of 18th-century formal elements in the layout which have been incorporated into the landscape park
- because of the partly preserved original planting
- because of the visual-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
