Inleiding

Romme (1896-1980).

Introduction

Funerary monument for the Wiegman-Dobbelmann family, built in 1907 after a design by Ed. Cuypers, in collaboration with sculptor Pierre Elyssée van den Bossche. The funerary monument was erected following the death of Theresia Johanna Theodora Marie Dobbelmann (1866-1906). The monument is situated on the Roman Catholic cemetery Buitenveldert in Amsterdam.

Description

The FUNERARY MONUMENT is set around a flagstone with a standing structure featuring an image at the head, spanning the full width of the monument. On the sides the monument is screened from the surroundings by a low enclosure. The whole rests on a rectangular plan and is primarily constructed from sandstone. Dense rows of conifers have been planted around the grave, placing the monument within an enclosed frame and serving as a backdrop. The monument is a composition of architecture and sculpture and is designed with stylistic features from Art Nouveau and Oriental motifs. Some motifs refer to death, such as the poppy seed heads beneath the lanterns.

The left and right enclosures are terminated at the front by a heavy corner pilaster. Short bronze railings are attached here at the front. The central section is left open. Relative to the surroundings, the floor of the monument is raised, with a large rectangular stone in the middle covering access to the burial vault. On this flagstone a large raised cross is mounted and bronze rings at the corners. The standing structure adjoining the low enclosure contains a higher rising section in the middle in the form of a Celtic cross. In the centre of the cross a radiating wreath is incised, surrounded by a bronze band. This band is decorated with cherub heads forming the halo for the image of Theresia standing here. The image of Theresia stands on a pedestal with the letters IN MEMORIAM incised upon it. The upper section of the standing structure recedes. On the lower section of the standing structure, bronze reliefs are placed on either side of the image. These depict a funeral procession of angels, children, martyrs and saints. On the left and right corners of the standing structure large bronze lanterns are positioned with purple glass panes. The texts for the deceased are incised on the base of the standing structure and on the enclosure. The letters are gilded.

Valuation

The FUNERARY MONUMENT is of general interest due to its architectural and funerary historical value, as a design by architect Ed. Cuypers (1859-1927), which was executed in collaboration with Pierre Elysée van den Bossche (1849-1921). The funerary monument holds a prominent place in the oeuvre of architect Cuypers. The funerary monument is a fine example of a good harmony between architecture and sculpture, which among other things is characteristic of the architect's designs from this period.

Additionally, the funerary monument contains cultural-historical and genealogical value as the grave of politician C.P.M. Romme (1896-1980).
