Inleiding

MOLENRESTANT.

Waardering

Het molenrestant is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege bouwtechnisch-historische waarden als herkenbaar en representatief relict van een houten achtkante poldermolen uit de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw die in het begin van de 20e eeuw is omgebouwd tot motorgemaal;

- vanwege cultuurhistorische waarden als essentieel onderdeel van de ontginnings- en waterstaatkundige geschiedenis van Zuid-Holland en de plaatselijke geschiedenis;

- vanwege situationele waarden betreffende de belendende waterlopen, het open polderlandschap en de historische gaafheid van de omgeving;

Introduction

MOLEN REMNANT. This octagonal mill was built in 1861 on commission of the Commission for the Drainage of the Lakes in the Old Polder of Pijnacker. It was set up as a polder mill for the drainage and pumping of a peat-worked area in the Old or High polder of Pijnacker and had a screw as its water-lifting device. The mill was normally to discharge as auxiliary pumping from the High polder. If the main pumping there stood still due to too high a boezem level, it could still continue pumping by discharging to a special storage boezem. The mill was dismantled around 1918, whereby the mill sails, cap, the body well above the lowest collar beam and the machinery were removed. The mill remnant acquired a function as a mechanical pumping station and operator's dwelling. It currently functions as an electric pumping station and dwelling. The mill remnant still has a significant function in a fairly open and reasonably original polder landscape.

Description

The mill remnant consists of the mortared brick base with a wooden octagon on top. The mill remnant, consisting of three storeys, is cut off well above the lowest collar beam, is covered with thatch and provided with a wooden pointed roof. The mill remnant is equipped with a fully automatic pump installation which is not of value from the perspective of monument conservation. The rear water channel is currently executed in concrete. The fore water channel is covered with a wooden deck and can, by means of a closing mechanism, discharge in two directions as mentioned above. The mill remnant is provided with two gable stones relating respectively to the construction of the mill and the conversion to a motor-driven pumping station.

Valuation

The mill remnant is of general importance:

- by reason of construction-historical values as a recognizable and representative relic of a wooden octagonal polder mill from the second half of the 19th century which in the early 20th century was converted to a motor-driven pumping station;

- by reason of cultural-historical values as an essential component of the land reclamation and hydraulic engineering history of South Holland and local history;

- by reason of situational values concerning the adjoining watercourses, the open polder landscape and the historical integrity of the surroundings;

- by reason of its rarity as a polder mill with a closing mechanism in the fore water channel to be able to discharge both to the High polder and to a storage boezem. The system of temporary discharge to storage in a storage boezem occurred at a number of polders in the east of Delfland. However, scarcely anything remains of these. This makes this mill remnant particularly important.
