Omschrijving
- de ouderdom;
- zowel de zelfstandige tuinhistorische waarde als de complementaire tuinhistorische waarde ten opzichte van kasteel Elsloo;
- het voor Nederland zeldzame verschijnsel van een hellingbos als substantieel onderdeel van de totale historische tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT from the first half of the 19th century belonging to Elsloo Castle.
The 19th-century landscape layout extends to the south of Elsloo Castle. The delimitation of the historical country estate follows, with the exception of the northern boundary, that of the protected village scene Elsloo. For a precise indication of the delimitation, reference is made to the appended map. The layout has an elongated form and is divided with mixed deciduous forest, natural waterfalls, springs and ponds which are connected to each other by the Hemelbeek. The Maas slope closes off the park layout on the east side and the dyke along the Julianakanaal the west side. Winding paths run in the valley of the Hemelbeek and on the Maas slope; the paths located to the north are asphalted, the southern ones unpaved. From the paths the walker has engaging views of the castle, over the ponds, lawns and onto the Maas slope at various locations. Furthermore, the layout provides space for grassy slopes (to the east of the Hemelbeek, at the foot of the slope forest), grassland (on both banks of the Hemelbeek) and a lawn extending in an easterly direction with beech and plane trees. In the westerly direction the voluminous dyke of the Julianakanaal somewhat diminishes the panoramic enjoyment. Only from the Maas slope is there the possibility of looking westward over the dyke. The park is a mixed deciduous forest or slope forest. In spring there bloom cuckoo pint, wood anemone, ramsons, alpine bistort, rampion, chickweed; in the slope forest grows a rare marsh flora due to the many springs that originate there. On the south side the park layout gradually transitions into the drainage area of the Hemelbeek and there exists a visually diffuse transition zone between park layout and "free" nature, being the Bunderbos. An architect of the 19th-century landscape layout is not known. In 1969, on the site of the former French formal garden, an educational herb and native plant garden of approximately 50 large and small beds with an area of almost 1 hectare was established under the guidance of botanist P. Habets; the herb and native plant garden does not form part of the protected park.
Valuation
THE HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT from the first half of the 19th century belonging to Elsloo Castle is of general interest because of:
- the age;
- both the independent garden-historical value as well as the complementary garden-historical value in relation to Elsloo Castle;
- the rare phenomenon for the Netherlands of a slope forest as a substantial component of the total historical garden and park layout;
- the total and richly varied ensemble of historical experiential and perceptual moments that, while walking, present themselves to the observer.
