The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

On both sides of the Canal Wessem-Nederweert, just south of Hulsen and near Wessemerdijk 7, there is a CULVERT under the canal, one of two culverts. There was already a culvert at this location, but it was found to be too small for the passage of water from the Zuid-Willemsvaart to the Noordvaart. This water was necessary to maintain the minimum water level in the Noordervaart, so that inundations could be carried out. Therefore the Engineers constructed an additional culvert there in 1939 which is still there, a few metres north of the old culvert.

Description

Because of relief differences between the Zuid-Willemsvaart and the Noordvaart—which are connected to each other by means of a lock—a watercourse runs from the south side of the Zuid-Willemsvaart near Arishoek to the culvert under the Canal Wessem-Nederweert. Subsequently this watercourse turns northward and flows into the Noordervaart, approximately 100 metres east of the lock chamber at Hulsen. The culvert is constructed entirely of concrete and consists of three elongated inlets, divided by two tapered culvert walls. In these culvert walls seatings are present for (no longer existing) schotbalken. The culvert is intact and shows no signs of war damage. The culvert is of general interest. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the strengthening and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. The culvert is architecturally and historically important because of the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. The object is also important for the typological development of various defence objects and structures concerning national defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the national defence (the totality of positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel region which is culturally and historically important as a military landscape. The culvert has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waters and soil composition of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex great experiential value. Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. The entire position as a large-scale military complex and a reminder of a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
