Inleiding
De SCHUTSLUIS is gebouwd in de Zuid-Willemsvaart in 1932, ter vervanging van een oudere sluis. De sluis is gebouwd in de stijl van het Functionalisme. Het object werd gebouwd door aannemer N.V. Neton Mij. de Peel uit Neerkant. De sluis is ter hoogte van Weert gesitueerd en gebouwd in opdracht van Rijkswaterstaat.
Omschrijving
Schutsluis, voorzien van een rechthoekige sluiskom, en een bovenhoofd en onderhoofd en heeft een totale lengte van 80 meter. De twee sluisgebouwen hebben een onderbouw van gewassen grindbeton met bedieningsruimten uitgevoerd in baksteen. De stalen hefdeuren zijn opgehangen tussen twee grindbetonnen torens met een overbrugging van baksteen waarin zich een hefinstallatie bevindt. Aan weerszijden van de heftorens bevinden zich de gewichten die de hefdeuren optakelen. In de overbruggingsgedeelten bevinden zich stalen vensterkozijnen met roedeverdeling. De overbruggingsgedeelten hebben een betonnen plat dak.
Waardering
De sluis in de Zuid-Willemsvaart ter hoogte van Weert is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technologische en typologische ontwikkeling met een pionierskarakter in de architectuur van sluisbouwwerken in de eerste decennia van de twintigste eeuw. De architectuurhistorische waarden van de sluis worden bepaald door het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de bouwtechniek, het ontwerp en het innovatieve materiaalgebruik.
