Introduction

The complex of the Peel-Raam fortification in the municipality of Weert begins at the Belgian border in the southwestern corner and follows the Zuid-Willemsvaart in a northeastern direction. Casemate K 66 is situated on the northern side of the Zuid-Willemsvaart in the gardens behind the residential houses Noordkade 28 and 29.

Description

Casemate K 66 is situated in the gardens of two dwellings. The greater part of the casemate is located in the garden of the property Noordkade 28. The casemate is executed in reinforced concrete. In the southwestern façade of the casemate there are four loopholes; in the southeastern façade one loophole. In the northeastern façade there are two rectangular openings: one of the openings is closed off with brick. Casemate K 66 has been preserved in reasonable condition.

Evaluation

The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the processing of reinforced concrete. It is also of importance for the typological development of various defence objects and structures regarding national land defence.

The casemate has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of land defence (the whole of fortifications on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical importance. The casemate has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. The casemate is in a reasonably high degree intact.
