Inleiding
SPOORTUNNEL, gesitueerd binnen de bebouwde kom van Weert naast het station van Weert, gebouwd in circa 1913 als onderdeel van het spoorwegcomplex te Weert. De spoortunnel is gebouwd in de stijl van het Traditionalisme. De opdrachtgever was de Nederlandse Staatsspoorwegen. De spoortunnel werd aangelegd door de Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen. In 1949 werd bij gelegenheid van de electricificatie van de spoorlijn Eindhoven-Maastricht een natuurstenen St. Raphaël-beeld van Cor van Geleuken, aangebracht boven de sluitsteen aan het Stationsplein.
Omschrijving
De spoortunnel heeft een opstand van gele verblendsteen met metselwerk in kruisverband. Het object heeft een betonnen boogconstructie versterkt met staal. Boven de tunnelbogen is decoratief metselwerk aangebracht. De afgeronde hoeken en de bogen van het object zijn van granietblokken. De balustraden van de brug worden geaccentueerd door twee natuurstenen banden. Midden onder de tunnel is een ventilatieopening naar het perron van het station.
Waardering
De spoortunnel is van algemeen belang. Het object vertegenwoordigt een cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van de sociaal-economische geschiedenis in Weert, als onderdeel van het spoorwegcomplex te Weert en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van een typologische ontwikkeling van spoortunnels. RAILWAY TUNNEL, situated within the built-up area of Weert next to Weert station, built in approximately 1913 as part of the railway complex at Weert.
