OMSCHRIJVING UITWATERINGSSLUIS

Inleiding

- als een bijzondere uitdrukking van een landschappelijke ontwikkeling en als een belangrijk overblijfsel van de geschiedenis van de inpoldering van Noord-Groningen;

- vanwege de bijzondere situering in de dijk, vanwege de nauwe ruimtelijk-visuele en de functionele samenhang met de molen en de molenaarswoning en omdat de sluis onlosmakelijk is verbonden met het omringende polderlandschap;

DESCRIPTION OF OUTFALL SLUICE

Introduction

The polder mill 'Goliath' is accompanied by an OUTFALL SLUICE, which was built in 1876 on the orders of the Water Board de Eemspolder. The sluice is a masonry outfall sluice with flood and ebb gates placed in the sea dike the Eemspolderdijk. The polder water was discharged through this sluice into the Wadden Sea until the bedding of the Emmapolder. The sluice originally equipped with pointed gates was altered in 1932 and has since had sliding gates. In the 1950s the sluice quays on the north side of the dike were connected to each other by concrete beams.

Description

The outfall sluice has on the mill side three quay walls of facing brick. The two southern ends of the quay walls running in the flow direction are rounded off and provided with a concrete edge. The timber sliding gate is operated by means of a turning mechanism, which is connected with two standing rod-rods with teeth, to which the gate is attached. Most of the iron components of the sluice are on the higher cross quay wall above the sluice opening and form part of a sliding guide construction. In the quay wall above the sluice opening there are two foundation/memorial stones of grey hardstone with amongst other things the year of construction 1876. The north side of the sluice consists amongst other things of bent quay walls of facing brick with a concrete edge. The quay walls are connected to each other by means of concrete beams. At the place where a tumbling flap was previously located, there is now a non-functional storm gate.

Valuation

The sluice is of general interest because of the great cultural-historical and ensemble value:

- as a distinctive expression of a landscape development and as an important relic of the history of the reclamation of North Groningen;

- because of its distinctive location in the dike, because of the close spatial-visual and functional relationship with the mill and the miller's house and because the sluice is inextricably linked with the surrounding polder landscape;

- because of its recognisability and because of the considerable degree of integrity.
